Look both ways before crossing the street. Then look again.

it's a little bit of both out in scarborough...drivers roll through stops or don't care that people are already crossing the intersection, or roll through the traffic lights when making turns...i've been witness to this multiple times walking around my hood, you just have to have your spidey senses on...

and on the other side are the pedestrians that don't stick to the crosswalk and jump through traffic or don't care about the lights and cross holding up traffic...the only reason i don't want them getting hit is because it will make my insurance go up...gah...

Yes, he was probably drunk when he we struck the first time.

Pedestrians have become much more careless these days. It's even worse when I'm bicycling. Since I'm making any noise, people who don't look don't know we're on a collision course so it's always up to me to swerve, slow down or yell. And I find it's mostly women who are texting and walking without looking ahead. What's with that?

I looked at the Fiskar electric car and it makes artificial vroom vroom noises for that reason. Unlicenced, uninsured ebikes on sidewalks etc. Dumb and dumber.

At the malls people waddle down the middle of the driving lanes to get to their cars and get snarky if you give them a beep of the horn. MOOOve over cow.

Nobbie48 for prez! My wife always tells me to slow down in mall parking lots because of those idiots.. I found high beams and the horn to work quite well instead  Of course, I practice what I preach and when I'm going to/from my car, I stick to the edges of the driving lanes and get a move on crossing.

Natural selection will take care of those who don't pay attention when crossing the street. period.
Let them listen to ipods, talk on cellphones and run the light~
last year (I think) someone got killed by a go-train in oakville because they were listening to their ipod lol

All I can say is thank the flying spaghetti monster for witnesses that stick around. I almost killed a dude running across Lakeshore rd and Elizabeth street a few years back. Beautiful afternoon, I was moving at about 60kph when the light turned yellow.

I was about 35-40 yards from the light. No traffic, no visible hazzards, so I kept going rather then haul on the brakes. I would have just cruised through before the light would even turn red, then it happened.

Out of no where some baggy pant a#$hole runs full out from Gino's pizza out the door in a full out sprint across the street and right in front of my bike.

Tire howling, tires on the edge of losing all grip, but I stopped some how, maybe a foot away from the guy. Now everyone on the patios are staring at me assuming I was doing something wrong or not paying attention. If course the guy I almost hit blames me screaming "WTF YO?!" at me at the top of his lungs. He kept going on and on and I could not bring myself to say anything back. I was in some sort of shock I guess. I really though I was going to hit and kill this guy. Finally someone who saw the whole thing came over to chew the guy out for what he did. Started a huge verbal fight between the two. The guy I almost hit told us both where to go and then ran away.

I slowly made my way home. I never felt the way I did that day. It stuck with me for a while as well.

And if you had hit him (and he survived) he would have turned around and sued you, despite him being a complete idiot and 100% at fault. Similar thing happened to me and thank FSM a ttc employee witnessed what happened because no one else did... Just takes one ******* not paying attention to mess up your life.

I thought yellow lights mean be prepared to stop.

Maybe that person had the same idea as you thinking they would make it across the street before the light turned red.

Would you like to re-think this post? I think you should.

Maybe as I could have misunderstood the post.

It just seems that the rider and runner had the same idea to beat the red light.

Logic would suggest they were traveling perpendicular to each other. If that's the case then the pedestrian would have been crossing against a steady red.

bahaha I made you write perpendicular

Pfft I don't care he said he had time to stop for the light but wanted to run through the yellow to avoid the red light.
Remember this is HIS side of the story.

Your argument is flawed.

I'm too noticing a lot of pedestrians pulling dumb moves these days. I don't know what it is this time of year...it's getting darker earlier, the weather and therefore driving visibility isn't as great...etc. I can't count the number of pedestrians jaywalking across major streets or to the centre median, and most of them are VERY difficult to see. I haven't had a close call yet, but I've had many instances where I've thought "jesus, if that person had run out in front of me I wouldn't have seen them until the last second". Couple that with wet slick roads covered in leaves and debris, and it would make stopping quickly that much harder. And get this - the other day I saw someone jaywalking across Lakeshore with a BABY in a stroller. This guy was AT A LIGHT, and could've waiting the extra minute or so for the light to change.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with Darwin taking care of these situations. But I'd hate to be the person to strike and kill a pedestrian, even if they were in the wrong.

Yet there is no pedestrian crackdown by the Police campaign.
They have no problem getting tv time when they want to crack down on "speeders".
Start handing out tickets.

I work at UTSC, and whenever I am walking in from the parking lots I need to cross the intersection twice. Almost every time, without fail, students either cross when they have the red, all four ways are red (light is just changing), or on the green. Point is, whenever they do cross I never once see any of them look to check that there is no right-turning vehicle, or if someone is going to blow through the light.

I've even had a few look at me funny because I always look over my shoulder to check for right-turners before stepping into the intersection as well as check for left-turners, then check again for left-turners when I am around the mid-point of the intersection (when I am essentially 'in their lane').

I also fear for the day when cars have pedestrian detection in them (like Volvo was working on), which will cause them to stop if someone walks in front of them. When that happens we'll see people step out 6 inches in front of the car because it's gonna stop for them....right?

Let them look at you funny. You will be alive they will be looking at up from the ground under a car one day with that attitude.

It amazes me how blindly people just walk across a street. As you noted, the right turners or red light runners.

That would be a cool game for the kids to play, let's make the cars shut off.

It means STOP unless its unsafe to do so. 60kph 30 yards from the intersection means a hard stop, as in not a safe one. The guy on foot HAD a red light, he just didn't care.

Lets see:
-Pedestrians jaywalking without looking around
-Jaywalking with a dark jacket, drivers windows fogged up
-thinking they always have the right-of-way

Darwin awards please
