Look both ways before crossing the street. Then look again.

Last night, in the rain, my mother got in a fender bender (tanker hit her from behind at low speed) so I went straight from work to help her. On our way to the collision centre I was blocked in the middle of Jane & Finch intersection by a white smart car driven by an old chinese lady. She had struck a pedestrian who was still crossing when the light turned yellow. I flipped on my hazards, got out to check on her and saw that a few other people were already by her side helping her to the sidewalk. I gave her a blanket and left my number with one of the other witnesses to give to police (who later took my statement).

Resumed my drive to the collision centre and at the next set of lights the same thing nearly happens again. Some idiot decided that he'd try to sprint across the street on a yellow light ("no walk" sign for him) while a left-turning car is doing the same thing. Car came within inches of running him over.

A lot of similar incidents lately. Too many inattentive people out there who just don't mix well with dark, rainy conditions. The following story was particularly maddening and reminded me of that lady who collapsed in the TTC station: http://www.cp24.com/news/motorists-drove-around-collision-victim-s-body-police-1.1019853

Pedestrians seem to think they own the road. They will always lose even if they are right to a car.
I do see a fair amount of drivers just whipping through the make the left turn without looking to see if anyone is crossing first.

yea... I guess the point I was trying to make is that everyone is responsible for being aware of their own surroundings yet no one seems to be. If all we had on the road were some un-skilled drivers yet everyone paid attention to what's going on around them, it would go a long way.

And people tell me I'm a pussy cause I won't jaywalk into traffic...some people are just begging for natural selection to continue proving itself.

A number of people got hit today. A few of them hit and runs.

Oh yeah wearing all black when it's dark or raining out is not the best idea a pedestrian should implement.
The same goes for people on bicycles without any lights or reflectors.

Driving home from work I saw a number of parents out with their little ones, the kids in their dark costumes were difficult to see, but their parents who were not in costume were just as difficult because they more often than not were wearing blue or black jeans and navy or black coats. Only one group was outfitted with any type of reflective vests and oddly enough these same people were using the sidewalk instead of the road and not randomly criss crossing the road with out looking. The parents would have been mostly younger than I am, and I have to wonder where all the idiots came from because when I was a kid it was well understood that you wore something reflective and did not criss cross the street (go up one side down the other) and looked both ways.

smae thing this morning, person crossing don mills rd south of eglington ave, walking across really late on the light will get you killed if drivers are not paying attention.

With the one involving the woman who was hit and run, apparently afterwards she was lying on the road and drivers were just driving around her. What is wrong with people.

Another disturbing thing about the hit and run in Stouville... he got hit the first time... that guy in the mercedes SUV took off, a second time, that guy called the cops... and then the police car hit the guy when they arrived on scene! WTF?!

The first car had no excuse to leave the scene but the second driver could've thought the person was a deer that was lying on the road. Apparently the man was staggering in the middle of the road.

The block canvas method is also more efficient. Why do you think Statistics Canada uses it and if they are, why not the trick or treaters? As for the woman.. I feel sorry for her daughter considering the fact that her irresponsible mother decided to orphan her kid by pulling a stupid stunt like crossing a major arterial, mid-block in lively traffic.

I'm guessing you mean he was staggering in the middle of the road BEFORE he got hit by any cars ? lol.

Yes, he was probably drunk when he we struck the first time.

Pedestrians have become much more careless these days. It's even worse when I'm bicycling. Since I'm making any noise, people who don't look don't know we're on a collision course so it's always up to me to swerve, slow down or yell. And I find it's mostly women who are texting and walking without looking ahead. What's with that?

Natural selection will take care of those who don't pay attention when crossing the street. period.
Let them listen to ipods, talk on cellphones and run the light~

I love it how they don't use the sidewalks that their tax dollars paid for and they often walk down the middle of the road without a care. A close buzz with the horn blasting usually sets'em straight, or so I heard

Just gotta put a push-bumper on my Jetta and get some run-flats (friggin bone fragments) :D

There's a 70+ year old who goes for a morning walk every morning..... she walks on the street3-4 feet away from the curb (on the actual street), dressed in dark navy blue track pants, jacket and tuque.

I've stopped my car and asked her politely to use the sidewalk because I can't see her unless my headlights are directly on her.... she replied with "But the cracks bother me" once and "but when there's snow people don't shovel their sidewalk" just last week.

She definitely should not be out on her own.... o_O

That's something I'd report to popo.. Disoriented old lady walking down the road, thinks its snowing. Can't hurt, can help by having something on paper that might get her help later.

ok, dark clothing is one thing, but folks with dark skin with black clothing at night...yeah, almost clipped a few folks pulling up to an intersection. the problem is, i will be pulling up to an intersection and some folk pop out between cars instead of sticking to the crosswalk. i will be wanting to turn right, and most times there is a right turn lane, but folks sneaking through between the cars don't realize this and walk out right in front of me...haven't hit anyone yet, but jaywalkers i can mostly see, it's when you are coming up to a bunch of stopped cars and people are weaving in between them rather than sticking to the crosswalk...grrr

I'm beginning to see a pattern here...
A 33-year-old woman was killed in a separate collision at 760 Lawrence Ave. W. near Dufferin St. around 6:50 a.m.

It is believed she was cutting across the roadway to catch a bus when she was struck by a westbound 2004 Nissan followed by an eastbound 2006 Volvo on Lawrence Ave. W. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

and

On Wednesday, a wheelchair-bound man in his 30s suffered a broken leg after he refused to leave the Gerrard St. E. and Sherbourne St. intersection and was hit by a vehicle.

Keep'em coming.. The more get splattered now, the better the gene pool and the traffic situation here will be
