Let the games begin

25% on everything certainly *sounds* bad

75% of the products/materials Canada makes go to the United States.

I don't think it'll happen. To me, as an opinion, this is nothing more that rattling the cage to get people on edge and get his way on something else.

Let's hope so.

It will hurt the Excited States as much as it will Canada and Mexico. Let's hope cooler heads prevail.

Problem is if it affects say 100,000 automotive jobs on each side of the border, he is affecting 0.25% of Canadian jobs and 0.03% of American jobs.

America is so much much larger then Canada that nothing will ever hurt them as much as us. The entire Canadian automotive industry relies on the US for parts but there only a fraction of American cars that need Canadian parts.

I'm only versed in automotive industry but I'd imagine the energy and other highly intertwined industries would end up with similar math.

Trudeau's answer should be:
We are also concerned about the border after a recent 100-bullet shoot-out in Toronto using smuggled guns from America. The new US administration can expect our full support in working to secure the border, making the tarrif threat no longer an issue.

If he opens the door on the border tying it to trade it should absolutely include smuggling and specifically firearms...

As for the impact to Canada, it will be very tough. Our currency will drop which means inflation here for imported goods from the US. It also means lots of inflation in the US as the end consumer usually pays the tariffs via higher prices. The three countries represent 43% of all US imports and 42% of all US trade (in and out). Canada alone represents 60% of all US oil imports.... add Mexico (10%) and it is now 70% of imports. He is planning to tariff all...

As for coming rate cuts, I would hope the US and Canada feds shut them down to not make what is coming worse. Time to prepare.

"Donald Trump says he will hit China, Mexico and Canada with new tariffs on day one of his presidency, in an effort to force them to crack down on illegal immigration and drug smuggling into the US."

How is illegal immigration into the US our (or any other country's) problem? And do we actually send a lot of drugs over the border? I thought it was just Mexico?

IMO this is mostly posturing. He ran on border protection and he will put the screws to everyone to walk away with something to show he checked off a campaign promise.

I don't think it's posturing at all. I don't believe he understands or cares what the impact of the tariff will be on either side, he just thinks tariff is "the most beautiful word in the dictionary". He continually re-iterates that Americans won't bear the cost, that the cost lands on the exporters somehow. There's not much upfront cost to imposing it, he does not have to build a tariff, and with a fully Republican government he will have few obstacles to making it happen. He has specifically picked a cabinet that will do what he wants and will not push back on bad ideas

Remember the last time ? His wall was an abject failure.
It's amazing how detached from reality our elected leaders are. "Others" are always at fault and will always foot the bill. Until the bill shows up and they realize it's theirs to pay.

Just remember there are far more checks and balances in the US then here. I believe i posted something not too long ago that Harper said, "Even with a minority Cdn government I could do more then a sitting President with a house majority" - paraphrase.

You're correct, he's trying to stack the deck to get his agenda through, but that doesn't mean he means what he says (this should be obvious to everyone by now). We shall see, but Trumps track record is to be a bully because that's how NY businessman do it.

And do we actually send a lot of drugs over the border? I thought it was just Mexico?

Apparently we (Canada) produce a surplus of Fentanyl. Occam's Razor. Where's the easiest/quickest place with the largest customer base to dump what we can't use at a profit?
