Let the games begin

You're correct, he's trying to stack the deck to get his agenda through, but that doesn't mean he means what he says (this should be obvious to everyone by now). We shall see, but Trumps track record is to be a bully because that's how NY businessman do it.
What does it mean then ?
He campaigned on it and now he'll do whatever he can to see it through.
He has the House, Senate and Scotus in his pocket - where are the checks and balances ?

Interesting. It won't let me quote you quoting me. I know it's OUR money but am under no illusion that politicians give a crap about us. US military needing to add 10%+ on their fuel bill will hurt them.

He campaigned on the wall in 2016, won and Republicans had the House and Senate. How did that go again? 😬

I'll play a little devils advocate here. Something to keep in mind is that he can't run for re-election, so he really doesn't have to give anyone the time of day. That being said if he can't come back what is important to him? Probably legacy, so i expect he's gonna swing for the fences.

It will be an interesting 4 years, that is for sure!

Can a president go for a third term if it's not consecutive?

No. US Presidents are limited to 2 terms in their lifetime.

I suppose he could attempt to extend what a term is to say 6 years. Which is what Putin has done.

But I suspect it would require an amendment to the constitution and off the cuff I believe that requires a majority of the states to vote in favour etc, etc.

I'm surprised they live through their terms. Most of the recent candidates have been at deaths door before they even start.
Years ago I noticed that almost all Presidents seem to enter office with a full(ish) head of coloured hair. Then after they leave the white is extremely noticeable. I expect that job is stress level 1000.

I suspect you're right if you care about the job and the citizens. If, on the other hand you took the job as a path to taxpayers picking up your golfing/surfing/vacation bills, that would be much less stressful.

No, 22nd Amendment:

No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

The last (and only AFAIK) president to serve more than two terms was FDR, basically served three, elected for a fourth but passed shortly into four. Truman was exempt from amendment as he was in office before it was put in place but a third term was not in the cards for him.

For any president to go more than three they will have to pass a new amendment which can be a difficult hurdle by the rules.

Sabre rattling IMHO, tariffs are scary which makes them a good threat. A 25% across-the-board tariff would collapse the Canadian economy quickly -- we're talking weeks to a couple of months before the damage got so deep we'd be decades recovering. The US would feel some pain if they tariffed Canada 25%, but less, it will come on gradually, and they can stop the pain with the flick of a switch.

In general, the US concerns with foreign trade are simple:
1) Level the trade balance. If a country has a trade surplus with the USA and a set of protections that support it, Trump wants those trade barriers removed. Canada has a number of trade barriers and subsidies that restrict access for US producers to Canadian markets.

2) Protect the Borders. If drugs or migrants are flowing from any country into the USA, the US wants reasonable mitigation efforts in place.

----------------------------------- // ----------------------------------------
Canada has a lot of sneaky protectionist practices, most driven by special interest lobbies. These practices don't benefit the country as a whole, they benefit small groups -- usually farmers and their first-level producers like Dairies, Fromageries and small groups of established importers. Do we still need consumers to subsidize wealthy Dairy and Poultry farmers and producers? No, but their lobby is strong and politicians have proved unwilling to fight them. We did dump marketing boards for Wheat, corn, pork, beef, fleshy vegetables, oil & gas -- those markets became more competitive

How about one simple Christmas example. In Buffalo, a 20lb Butterball premium Christmas Turkey at Walmart costs $29.32 CAD. Thanks to marketing boards, that same Butterball frozen turkey is $62.65 CAD in a local Canadian Walmart.

Same for softwoods, cheese, liquor, and a bunch of other things.

There's been rumours of Drumpf spitballing some kind of "executive order" workaround backed by the SCotUS to make term number amendments.

Impossible. Term limits are in the US Constitution (article 22). The President thru Executive order cannot amend the Constitution, nor can SCOTUS. A change of that type would require a Senate AND House 2/3 majority, or even harder, a 2/3 majority of State legislatures.

This one's never gonna getting past an X conspiracy theory.

Truman, Regan and Clinton all looked at removing term limits, they were crushed before they started.

I didn't say he can do it. He definitely wants to try, though.
