Kawi ZX6R Oil Filter screwed way too tight by a dealer

I was doing the first oil change as it's the beginning of the season and since it's the first oil change on this bike 07 Kawi ZX6R, there's little move to get a nice handle on the filter with your hand or even with a slipjaw pliers. I know the last oil change was done at a dealer and I read on the internet that those guys screw it on way too tight for liability but not sure what tool they use to screw it on though. So, I went and bought a oil filter wrench size 5 that fits onto the new oil filter perfectly but when I try to unscrew it it keeps slipping out . I'm running out of ideas and been spending the whole day yesterday and I can't take the bike out anywhere as I drained the oil and puncture a hole to try to clamp it out and lever it off but all to no avail.

I really need a help of a mechanic or someone who's had the same experience who has the right tool set to come take a look at it. I will compensate for your time.

I live in Yonge and Elgin Mills area in richmond hill.

Did you get a plastic filter cap? Put a few screws through it into the filter and it'll come off easy.

Chances are the rubber ring was not lubed and now it is seized. I had this issue with my F4i. I had to remove my fairing and use a rubber strapped wrench (barely fit and only rotated 1\4" at a time). But once lose, you can then use the oil wrench cap or hand.
Good luck and be patient.

Its probably not too tight you just dont have the right tool

Because of the tight location of the 07-2013 Zx6R filter with the plastic shroud around it, I see people do all kinds of stupid **** to try and get them off, when all you need is the proper $5 -10 tool to remove them using the end of the filter as its designed to be removed

If your tool is slipping its either crap, or the wrong size..Do not buy the plastic type, metal only...And always make sure it is on 100% and dead square before trying to turn it

K&N filters come with a nice 17mm bolt on the end that make removing a breeze for future reference.

I have the 3 jaw one from Canadian tire works for getting almost every filter off.

If you're in a bind you can hammer a screwdriver through it and use the handle for leverage.

Can be very messy.. If it comes to this you might as well get the dealer to remove it. Take a copy of the old receipt with u that way they know its their liability

Thanks. I bought the plastic which is no good I think I will go grab a metal one tmr. I wanted to initially get the metal one but they didn't have the right size for it so I went for the plastic, big mistake. Thanks I'll try it tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks everyone for your inputs on this. Greatly appreciate it. I will try couple of your ideas and post which worked out for me hopefully soon.

Messy as in you might get some oil on your hands? waaaah.

Seriously this is the way to do it. I've put my own oil filters on way too tight on a few occasions out of paranoia, and thats how i've gotten them off. Hammer the screwdriver right through, turn it as far as you can, remove and drive it through again. Do it 2-3 times and it will be loose enough to come off by hand.

When you put the new one on actually put it on hand tight. (plus a quarter turn with an oil filter wrench, because i'm paranoid and like removing oil filters with screwdrivers)

Do you have a part # for this? I checked the Canadian Tire website and didn't see it.
I don't I have had it for years most autoparts stores carry this style as well.

If he goes too far with the screwdriver then he can damage the engine casing holding the filter.. That's a far greater repair cost to have to shell out... And yes it has happened to a lot of ppl... Plus why risk it when u can get the dealer to loosen it at their risk???????????

I think he means go in from the side with the screwdriver. (Through one side and out the other.)
and to take it to a dealer he would have to tow it (Another expense) because he has no oil and holes in the filter.

wrap some wide rubber bands around the filter and use the wrench. Or if your wrench has teeth, jam something in there...filter was on way too tight on my bike from a previous owner so I just shoved a 3/4" ratchet in between the filter and wrench (i only had a car oil filter wrench) and it pried off. No damage to the ratchet.

I'd be careful about hammering a screwdriver, you might damage the threads unless you find a weak thin-walled area. or just drill into it (unless you have a punch to hammer through)

I got the same issue when I tried to remove my 09' zx6r oil filter, I bought multiple oil filter cap at canadian tire and none of them fit (all the caps are too big) and the one from dealer costs like $45!!

so in the end, I bought this (http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/brow...P/Fram+Swivel+Oil+Filter+Wrench.jsp?locale=en) from canadian tire, put a rubber mat between this and the oil filter then secure it and turn slowly. It will eventually come out.

Now I got a K&N filter on it with a 17mm, next oil change should be much easier.

some one said, hand tight and quarter turn.. thats what i been doing now both with filters and drain plugs no problems no drips.

also you can buy aftermarket filters which have a bolt on the exterior that you connect your wrench too.
