It's FILTERING, NOT lane splitting!

If you call it "environmentally responsible use of rubber resources" you're allowed to wheelie all the time.

Im going to take your motorcycle for a ride while your at work.

There is no law against "sharing without permission."

Didn't read the entire topic but...

Isn't

Filtering = All vehicles stopped and you move to the front?
Splitting = Vehicles moving, pass on the same lane while moving.

I am for Filtering but not splitting.

I am for Filtering but not splitting.

Those are the commonly accepted definitions; yes.

I'll bet all the people against filtering don't live in downtown Toronto. I'm all for it, especially on Queen St. I don't find drivers don't really care, some of them even move to the left to give me more space as I pass them on the right. But I'll extend the courtesy and keep to the left side of the right lane at the lights to allow cars to make right turns, something I don't see every motorcyclist doing since they too can be selfish arseholes.

Filtering...splitting is the same thing and it's illegal. To the neophyte who started this ridiculous thread....grow up!! When the downtown bicycle courier crowd does it and blows by you at insane speeds, how do you react? I don't want to kill some one because i changed lanes in traffic....signalling properly and well within the law....the press will write it up as a motorist running down a cyclist.

I had a bicycle courier get p/offed at me because he felt he had a right to put his bike on the road infront of me while i was driving. Thankfully it was at 20kmph. The guy threw his bike at my car...i got out to get his info so he could pay for the damage...he tried to ride through me....but only after he spat on the other side of the car!! i stood my ground and he bounced off me and into a car in the next lane....he damaged a second vehicle.

So.....replace the cyclist with a retard on a motorcycle.....do i need a baseball bat to stop him??? so he can pay for damage?? where does it end??

what a stupid thread!! gotta love GTAM!!

I defy anyone to find me a clause that says, absolutely, that sharing a lane with a vehicle is explicitly illegal in the HTA. Forget about colloquial terms like filtering or splitting. Just prove sharing a lane is universally illegal.

We can also share lanes with parked cars which is explicitly LEGAL in the HTA so I defy anyone to argue passing in the same lane as stopped traffic at a light is more dangerous than a possible door prize, or random pedestrian.

So far I haven't met a judge or cop that can argue that effectively. I filter every single day.

That being said. I don't lane split. There is an understood difference, even among the vernacular usage of the terms which also cannot be ignored.

So couldn't it fall under the HTA 172?

iii. repeatedly changing lanes in close proximity to other vehicles so as to advance
through the ordinary flow of traffic while driving at a rate of speed that is a
marked departure from the lawful rate of speed. O. Reg. 455/07, s. 2 (1).

Filtering...splitting is the same thing and it's illegal.

As one who lived and rode in California, they are NOT the same thing. Filtering occurs when the vehicles are stopped for a red light etc. and you filter between the cars to the front of the line. Lane splitting is when traffic is moving, albeit slowly, and you ride between the lanes (but staying in one lane).

One of my biggest pet peeves since moving back is the fact I can't filter at lights. I waste so much time sitting behind other cars then going slow when they take off, it is enough to make me want to park my bike.

Can you pass a moving car in the same lane?

Regardless of how clever you think you are about applying convenient "terms" you create....you effect the same thing.

No Judge would take you seriously and would slap you silly.....like a child

Neither of which would seem plausible to filtering. Has anyone ever heard of someone getting a 172 thrown at them with tow/suspension for filtering? I'm sure some lunatic cops have given it out, but has anyone heard of actual experiences?

If you try and flow through traffic illegaly past me....expect to be crushed.

Anyway, I fully expect there will be no small number of naysayers voicing their opinion against my post. And we know that a certain percentage of them probably don't even ride. And others will exhibit opinions that shoot themselves in the foot and we can't help those who resist helping themselves.

What is with people who lack a simple level of comprehension? With your post, we're talking a comprehension-deficit that seemingly completely skips ramifications for ALL road users who: a) don't recognize a new law b) understand the law c) abide by the new law...etc ...I'm (not totally) sure you get the idea.. but I hold out hope for the majority here.

If you try and flow through traffic illegaly past me....expect to be crushed.

If the law is passed and you belligerently/ignorantly (pick the one that suits you best) don't acknowledge it and if you try to kill me and fail, you will NOT get a second chance. And at a smart 5 or 10 kph speed differential, your odds of succeeding in your murderous attempt will not bode well for you after you psycho.

Funny how you left out alot of that law:

So who's charged if i change lanes and some clown on a motorcycle or bicycle for that matter is splitting lanes and runs into me?

If ....if....if...

Filtering doesn't bother me, this attitude does.

You need to realize when you filter your risking a ticket and ending up under a larger vehicle. Im not looking out for filtering bikes in my work truck.

Try this then....it doesn't speak to two vehicles occupying the same space!!

Where highway divided into lanes

154. (1) Where a highway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic,

(a) a vehicle shall be driven as nearly as may be practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until the driver has first ascertained that the movement can be made with safety;...........
