Is it worth dressing up/customizing a 250?

Actually. A 2 bros system will reduce the weight of your bike by 10 pounds. Which is something. Especially on a small displacement bike. Throw in a lithium battery for another 5 pound shaving. Thats 15 pounds right there. That is something.

Loose some weight - that's another 10 pounds

i did a few little things to my kawi 250, but nothing that cost a lot of money. I didn't see the point in throwing another $1k at it in exhaust and other goodies when I knew I'd be upgrading. So I kinda made it my own without putting a lot of money into it. I know the mods aren't going to make me anything, so I'll likely pull the HID's when I sell it and keep them for the next bike.

If it makes you feel good do it. I'll never get back the money I spent on my bike in mods but I don't care. I've learned a lot about doing my own work and my bike is personalised for me and is less generic. That's worth it to me.

One word of advice though, keep the stock parts for when you sell the bike. Your mods might not be everyone elses preference, having the stock parts gives you the best of both worlds and if the new owner of your bike is happy with your mods you can E-bay the parts.

Parts that improve the bike's ergos (bars, rearsets, levers, etc) are worth every damn penny.

Shiny little nick nacks, not so much.

On my fiancee's old 250 we put: a yosh, -1 +1, re jet, nose mode, undertail, 185 tires, HIDS, and air filter. We took 4 days to put all of those parts together. I will tell you that her bike pulled!

We kept it for 2 years, and then I gave her my k7 600. Does she regret doing that to her bike? No, she enjoyed it for the time that she had it. And to tell you the truth, so did I.

If the bike is a "stepping stone" up to a larger one, don't bother. You will never get your money back.

If the bike does everything you want and then some but there are a few little things you'd like to improve, go for it. Just remember that it costs a LOT to get any significant extra power out of an engine so if the bike's too slow for you, it generally makes more sense to buy a faster bike than try to make your slower bike faster. But if it's fast enough but say the suspension could use an upgrade (as an example), that would be worthwhile if you're going to keep it for awhile.

Don't bother....you already wasted your money on a 250, no point wasting extra money to mod your 250.

Maybe it's just me but I always get a kick out of the guys with a fully done up 250, wearing full racing leathers. Did they not realize it was a 250?

To OP, you just bought your bike and you're already talking about upgrading. Why didn't you get the bike you wanted in the first place? You do realize you don't have to push a SS to it's limits? You can ride it at your own pace until you get comfortable.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!
Please do not waste your money on 125/250 if you plan on upgrading. Be a man and get what you want right away. Unless you have money to burn, then do what you want.

Oh yea...you're gonna do well on this forum.

I want to put a new exhaust and remove the license plate mounts on my cbr 250r. But, I keep hearing that everyone upgrades the next year to something more powerful and I'm afraid the money I spend on this bike will go to waste if I upgrade next year. I love my bike even-though it's not as fast as I was hoping. Help.... :S

If your already planning on upgrading next season then Id say no just wait and save the money for the new ride, otherwise sure go ahead. I love to modify all my bikes no matter what Im going to do with it. I just like to work on my bikes and change things up, nothing I buy stays stock for long....

lol "Be a man"? Seriously?

What's wrong with full leathers on a 250? A slide down the road on bare skin at 40 kph can mess you up pretty good... never mind 100 kph which the 250 is perfectly capable of. Speed is speed and road rash is road rash regardless of how big your bike is. I guess you only need leathers if you're doing 200+?

Don't listen to this guy, do what you want to your bike. An exhaust and re-jet is a good idea if that's what you want. According to him you should have bought a hayabusa and looked cool instead of actually learning how to ride first. Run before you walk?

You obviously don't know how to read!!!!!!!!!
I clearly stated, "You can ride it at your own pace until you get comfortable".

Yes, seriously. I'm not making the point that your not a man if you have a 250, I'm saying that like OP stated, he already wants to upgrade. So he should have man'd up and got what he wanted and not been scared or brainwashed by all you to waste his money. Brand new bike and he already wants to upgrade.....does that make sense to you. It doesn't to me.

Well it looks like I started a decent debate. For 1 I can only afford a 250, so I cant upgrade for a bit anyhow ( until I win the lottery or work contracts start paying me what I'm worth). And lol being a girl I will not man up...;p

Point taken....however, i believe you understand the point I'm trying to make.

LOL given the slew of responses, it's pretty clear that nobody understood the point you were trying to make.

Xtina, as said previously, it's your bike. Do the research and see which mods will yield the most worthwhile results to you and go from there. I'm not familiar with the CBR250, but if it's anything like the ninja 250, you may want to look into a jet kit.

I bought a 250 this year I know I will likely sell next year but still opted to add slip on exhaust, air filter, rejet, eliminator kit, bought with frame sliders ..., exhaust as others stated 10 lb difference 10 percent increase... The way I look at it it's my bike and if I want to mod it I will not that concerned about losing much... Infact I'm adding higher set pegs so I can finish out the year the way I want at the track... At the end if the day it's your bike do whatever you like with it and don't let people tell you differently ... I love my D&D pipe! Jenn

Well, I don't expect it will make it noticeably faster but it will at least sound better. I keep getting the "wow your bike is pretty quiet" jibes and it's embarrassing to rev when you sound like a lawnmower. lol
My bike has about five times the displacement of yours and an additional four cylinders - and it's pretty quiet too. I'm okay with that and so are my neighbours. You'll find that loud exhaust appeals to fewer people, than quiet. Spend some time on the highway with a loud exhaust - either yours or an adjacent rider - it gets "old" pretty fast.
