I am in the market for a gopro and wondering if i should go with a hero 3 black( not new but a good deal used) or maybe a new silver... or should i buy a used hero 2 with a heap of accesories?

Do you plan to shoot at resolutions above 1080p and/or control it with your smart phone?

If not, Hero2 is all you need. If you find a broken one (got wet, bricked during software update, won't charge, won't turn on) I can fix it for usually under $15 (most of the time it's free). Keep your eyes out.

Hero2 is great, here's a demo of the quality (Front Cam and Shock Cam are Hero2, fork cam is Drift HD Ghost, rear cam is garbage Coutour Roam2). Audio is from Hero2 under tail in skeleton case (using gopro's built in mic). Click Quality to Original.

And you can get a Roam2 for $120 shipped (not sure if still has stock): http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforu...r-bankruptcy-sale-Roam2-for-under-120-shipped!

And just FYI, the Black can shoot 1080p60, none of the other models can.

thanks for this man! I have seen the hero 3 black and yes it is awesome compared to the hero 2 vid and drift one. The thing is a used hero 2 will be about 180 used( avergae from kijiji) and i can get a hero 3 black with mem card for $240. I did have an original hero though and still have 22 batteries and all the mounts so thats a couple bucks saved.

FYI - Anyone thinking about a HERO 3 - do a google on HERO 3 FREEZE <-- you will see that there are tons of people complaining about a fault in the HERO 3 that GoPro has not fixed. They wont do a recall because they dont want to admit there is a problem.

I'm still using a GoPro Hero 2. More than enough quality for my needs

I have been looking to get a gopro myself, my friend has a hero 3 silver that i use sometimes, but its the exact same as a hero 2 just in a smaller case. Im really tempted to just spend the extra and get the black edition, you get the remote with it to which costs like $70.

That video is amazing looks like you had a blast at the track!

Just bought myself a Hero 3 Black & bunch of accesories a few weeks ago. Make sure you UPDATE RIGHT AWAY before using it to prevent freezing issue problem. If you're recording anything less then 1080p & don't need the Wifi remote you could buy your self the silver/white edition. So far I've recorded everything in 1080p @60 frames per second and the image quality is superb. If you can dish out a few more bucks for the Hero 3 Black it's totally worth it in my honest opinion.

once your contour focused it seemed good just as good as the other 2 cams.. but really they are all in different lighting conditions.
i picked up the contour +2 GPS because of the sale and its mountable on a few things that the gopro just seems out of place on (rail mount), i think it shoots great quality but youtube ruins it. other thing i just started to realize is the gps feature is great as long as their site stays up, once it taps out you are going to need 3rd party software to have a usable gps feature. they have info on their site about 3rd party software that will do it so im going to have to learn how to export the video then do the gps overlay...but it is possible. no support is going to suck downt he road but when you get a $450 cam at half price knowing they have gone belly up you know what yer getting into before you click buy it now...im happy wit the purchase, just going to have to be ready to do my own tech support in the near future.

im going to grab a gopro eventually, im waiting to see what 2014 brings....ive been reading rumors about a possible slight design change... if they release a model with a small lcd on it built in and all controllable on the device with a bluetooth remote ide probably hop on it. current models just seem like the lack the controllability that i would want. it also should be able to flip modes on the device from full 1080, 720, and still frame shots....IMO - for something costing $450 it should have more features other than being a shockproof hi def cam in a waterproof case that you have to plug into a computer to change any settings.

The battery doesn't last for more than an hour or so. A battery backpack is pretty much mandatory if you are even considering using the wifi feature. Big dissapointment for me upgrading from the hd hero. What's the point of being able to capture in super high res if the ****ing camera dies before you get a chance to record?

Mine are ALWAYS plugged into power when recording, either on the bike, or a portable battery box.

That's the problem with the countour, no f'ing automatic exposure!!? LOL! Gotta connect it to a computer to change it? Who the F thought that up? Hero2 and Drift eat it for breakfast in changing lighting conditions :(

alot of good replies here! thanks guys! The black will not cost me and arm and leg... I can get a the hero black with an extra battery and 32gb sd card off a buddy for $250.
Or I can get a hero 2 with battery backpac plus extra batteries and alot of other goodies for $180... I just do not know which one to pull the trigger on with those options I am faced with.

It's worth it if you have a 4K TV lying around (I think the cheapest goes for $10-15,000..... the 84" is $25,000)

Just kidding. The Black is a bad gimmick. Only reason they gave it 1080 @ 60fps is because if they did that on the Silver, then everyone would go buy that and ignore the super HD black. 30FPS isn't horrid, btw.

does the hero 2 have 30 fps?

Just read in a random comment thread on a bike gallery on Reddit from someone that works at GoPro that if you're in the market for one to wait for a bit. Apparently a new one is coming out.

Does that eBay battery box actually work? Seems awfully cheap for the price and capacity. I've paid more for less and still had them be crap.

Ya and along with brand new comes higher prices!! i dont wanna pay more then $250 right now... and would like one for my trip down to PA next week.

Prices on the other models would probably drop. You could just borrow one from someone until then. Just a thought. I was just passing on what heard.

There is a rumour that the next GoPro iteration will be announced within a couple weeks. Source of the rumour is under NDA and won't say more. I would wait and see, there will likely be price drops on the current generation

Edit: looks like unL33T beat me to it :) Same source

Or I could buy a hero 2 used and when the new one comes out keep the hero 2 as a backup... my kids can use it on there bikes

I'd get the hero two. Pretty much looks the exact same day and night. I've compared all three, the first one is **** at night and the black only has fancy features you'll never use over the hd2. If you're charging while recording then your camera is exposed. Not a risk I'm willing to take.

I have Hero naked edition and it's more than enough for me even at 720. I won the camera in the rafle :)
Wish it had Bluetooth option for the remote. Such a nice option while on the bike.
