Canada got its notice with Trump 1.0 and we failed to diversify our economy, to find new markets, and to become less reliant on the US. First time shame on Trump, second time shame on Canada.
Trump talked up tariffs during his campaign and the only surprise here should be that he won the election. I think most Canadians assumed, or hoped, that Harris, as poor a candidate as she was, would win by a narrow margin.
Surveys say that most Americans like Canada and do not support tariffs or any action that would hurt Canada. Trump acts for himself and the MAGA crowd who believe his lies. Oddly enough, the impact of tariffs paid by Americans will negatively impact low income Americans, many of these are Trump supporters. Good, let them suffer.
We spend 3 - 4 weeks a year in the US and I do not dislike Americans as individuals, I dislike their brutal, take no prisoners, politics and many of their decisions that impact other countries. Canadians often resent the US because they seem to know, or care, so little about us. We're simply not on their radar, we're pretty much irrelevant to most Americans day to day.
The tariffs kick in next week and we may see Trump escalate as he threatened to punish any retaliation. We all better buckle up as it will likely get worse before it gets better. As prices increase in the US, auto production slows or stops in some areas, Americans get laid off when does Trump blink and back off? Trump has a history of doubling down and refusing to accept responsibility. He will have to find, or be given, an out that permits him to declare that he "won" the trade war to save face.
