I have no problem with the driver being arrested but is it the norm or was there a unique situation. I thought arrests were only for DUI and dangerous driving. The charge was speeding if you believe the news.

Speculation at the moment is that the driver was impaired.

Speculation at the moment is that the driver was impaired.
Shes a friend of a friend. Had to relay information to a friend who came down to Va Beach with me this past weekend.
Whats hitting the media isnt the facts of the case and the facts arent being released until the investigation is complete.

Actually he was charged with impaired operation. Or so they were saying on the radio as I passed the location, on Saturday morning.

Only thing I have read on this incident is from here which is why I said 'speculation at the moment'. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone, not the intent.

Drivers can get arrested for many things other than impaired/over 80 and dangerous such as careless, suspended, fail to remain, stunting...

Mis-information from the media; there's something new! Hope your friend's friend is OK.

there was a notion that the rider ran the red and the minivan had the right of way...i wonder how that will play out...

IF it is as is now being reported; rider ran red, driver was drunk, it could result in charges for both. One of those cases of doing something wrong but flying under the radar... until something else outs you.

Not everything in the HTA provides for an arrest authority. If someone was arrested, that means it was a pretty big offence, (however they could also be arrested if the stop reveals another arrestable offence such as under the Criminal Code, or if they had an outstanding warrant or something.

Um.... I was the motorcyclist involved in that accident that almost killed me. Yes, it's normal to arrest the idiot who hit me especially when he was drunk and speeding.

I didn't run the red. Man, I love how all the people who 'saw' the accident at the time have the urge to give their two cents. Everyone who witnesses an accident always thinks they saw this and that. People need to keep their mouths shut if they didn't see what they think they might have. I was stopped at a red light. My witness saw me. Why the hell would someone, especially on a motorcycle, stop for a red light then say "Well, I'm tired of waiting. MY TURN!" and run it? Common sense is lost these days....

I wasn't charged with anything because I didn't run the red or break any laws at any time.

Pretty sure most witnesses are going to say what they think they saw.

You never done this for a light that wont charge for a motorcycle?

To be quite honest, no, I haven't. I do believe you are allowed to run the red if the light is on a timer and doesn't change after a significant amount of time but really? I don't want a ticket on my perfect record. If I won't do it in that situation, why would I do it when there are actually cars around??

Common sense, I tell you...

Lights usually use an inductive sensor.
If you have decided the sensor is not functioming correctly the HTA allows you to treat the light as a four way stop sign.
