Internet troll gets jail time

Free speech has limits. This isn't a case of trolling. He was targeting things like memorial websites, to dead teenagers. He was harassing the families, of the deceased, causing them 'mental anguish' as the saying goes.

I'm all for free speech and I think that the price of it, is to be offended from time to time. Sometimes, though, speech is action. You can't make defamatory statements, from the presumed safety of anonymity, and expect that it won't come back to bite you. You can't incite a riot, then claim that you 'didn't do anything.' Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence.

If that's the case, then this is an issue of harassment, and in any civil society if you willingly target someone with negative actions or statements, consistantly and knowingly, that can be harassment.

However, does harassment warrant 18 months on a first conviction? I'm not a good judge..

I had no idea you could go to jail for mocking people, alive or dead. This guy was rude and obviously an *******, but I don't agree with this at all.

Simply put, this guy deserves a "beat down". Big and tough on the internetz but I am sure he can't fight if his life depended on it.

He had no respect for ppl's feelings.

That depends upon a few things, like the number and severity of the offences. I know of four such cases, involving this defendant. Perhaps he thought that he was targeting the dead, in a vacuum, but he was in fact targeting the relatives of people who had died at a tragically young age. The truth? Eighteen months sounds about right, considering he'll likely serve 6.

Well is it just a u.k. thing then? I have listened to Howard stern mock dead people like princess Diana openly and brutally and he never got charged or arrested for that. I realize this is a bit of a poor example but its one of the first things that came to mind. Personally I believe that what this Guy done shows no class at all, but I still can't see jail time unless he hurt someone physicaly or financially. A dweeb on the internet could be easily ignored. Look at how much belittling happens right here on this forum alone. If effecting someones mental state is all it takes then members here could be sent of to jail. The guy who did this is still one hell of a piece of garbage though. We could probably all agree on that.

Stern doesn't email The Queen, regarding Diana's death, or constantly insult her memory on The Queen's Facebook page.

What's the difference really. Its out there publicly. Emails and people on social sites can be blocked. It internet is not a happy magical place where bunnies hold hands and skip down the road. It real real place that allows real people to intecact with others faceless and impersonally. If you don't want to deal with it be careful of what you do. Again I can't stress enough that I don't support what he did in any way. However this guy is unfairly going to jail I.M.O.

This forum is random insults. Big difference with what he did. He targeted people. Just because there's a new medium for harassment doesn't make it any less harassing.

Yup, absolutely be careful what you do. For instance make sure that your relatives don't die under tragic circumstances

Again, you have a responsibility for the words, that you utter. If you pursue someone, in real life or on the internet (which is still 'real life', though many people just don't seem to get that), then you had better be prepared to deal with the results.

He needs some posts on his fb page mocking him about how popular he's going to be in prison being a virgin and all..

If it's a real place where real people interact then you have to face real consequences for your very real actions. You can't have it both ways, either the Internet is an anonymous hinterland with no bearing on the real world or it is.

JioAgain I will say just to be clear I do not condone or respect what he has done. However the family also made a choice to put up a fb page about their tragedy. That to me seems about as safe as putting your fresh wound I.to a tank full of hungry sharks. As fair or unfair as it may seem faceless ******** and the internet seem to go together quite well. Anyone who never would even consider this needs to learn that a lot of the time it may just be better to keep
Some of your personal life off the internet. I wish things were better and one would not have to worry about things like this but it does happen quite often. I do think some time away may scare the offender off from trying this again how ever why does hebget jail time when hackers and what not who steal identity or severs just get restricted internet access while this guy hoes to jail? Could he not just be ordered by the court to be prohibited from the internet (and I know that actually happens as someone on my uncle's wife side of the family got hit with that for hacking). I still think jail is too much for his action as disgusting as they may be. All in all what happened has happened and I would hope that some way some how this little twirp learns some kind of life lesson here. I on the fence I am about his jail time I am glad that in some way his actions caught up to him. Now we sit back and see how far law makers will take this now.

In a time when so many people didn't appear to be sociopaths, it wasn't necessary to send people to jail, for things like this. Apparently this is no longer the case.

So then, can you be arrested for laughing at someones funeral ?

I'm not saying i agree with whats he's doing, but there shouldnt be a law against bad taste. what about comics who make jokes in reference to the holocaust ? or the titanic ? or jonestown ?

( they would be repeated as well, if in the comic's repetoire )

btw, posting the face on thomas the tank engine, kinda funny lol

Sorry, but some of you just aren't getting it. This isn't a one-off. He was constantly badgering these people. Laughing at someone's funeral is in bad taste. Constantly goading people over someone's death, for weeks, is harassment.

Had to be requoted - laughing at someone's funeral and harassing someone (harassment by its very nature implies an ongoing thing) are two totally different concepts. Our U.K. e-tough virgin is going to jail for harassment, not for showing disrespect.

P.S. Wonder if he's going to be the mommy or the daddy with his cell mate, Bubba...
