Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

Sorry yes the recall letter, thats what I meant. So what is the compliance label they look for?

A label on the frame with the VIN, stating year and month of manufacture along with some business about the vehicle complying with certain emissions standards and such.

Oh ok so just make sure thats not peeled off by the previous owner.

So I've been reading through this thread and I didn't notice too much about taxes.

I am planning on going down to the states to buy a brand new bike. Do I have to pay the tax twice, once in the US and once in Canada?

You'd have to check each state's particular procedure, but you can either get the state sales tax refunded or waived since you'll be exporting the bike. In which state are you looking to purchase?

Buying in Buffalo, so New York state.

Have any of you ever shown up to the US Border without giving them 72 hours notice with a new bike.

The dealer is telling me he has people do this all the time with new bikes. Show up to the border and tell them you were at a dealership and decided to buy a bike on the spot. And then they process you on the spot?

I'm a bit wary of his advice, but at the same time it makes sense that in those type of situations they might have different rules. I can't give them 72 hours notice if I myself did not know I was buying a bike before that day.

The Cargo Van might give it away lol.

So whats the deal if I want to bring a 'bonded' titled bike back to canada for road use?

Just to let you know guys, I was audited by the mto couple of weeks after getting the bike plated. Keep the paper work for a little while longer just in case.

What do you mean by audited? did you reply to the letter they send questioning your purchase price or did you ignore it and they sent you a bill for what they think you should have paid?

+1. the stupid border goofs didn't believe the price i paid and i had to go through a 2 hour investigation before they released me even though i had tons of proof. they printed off a craigslist ad from a different state than what i bought my bike from and kept trying to say that was the bike i bought. retarded windsor border goofs. they even tried to charge duty, their computers said i didnt have to and they tried to override it to charge me 6.1% but they didnt know how so just charged gst.

then i got a letter from the mto a week after registering it basically saying prove to them the price i said i paid. not sure it was worth the hassle in my case, i'm sure it goes more smoothly for some ppl.

Hey guys! I picked up the bike in Louisiana(private sale) There was no problem crossing the border at all, that was very simple and easy. Taking the bike to Canadian Tire and getting the riv inspection was also no problem. I got a letter from MTO, some office in Oshawa, just them asking to send copies of the bill of sale, the blue paper from the border(fed), And some paper work from the mto office here in Mississauga. Anyway, I had everything and sent them copies that they wanted. Heard nothing after that and still ride it like I stoled it...

This tool might help, though it's intended for cars as A/C is always inserted.

Its pretty easy process to do yourself ,,, why waste $$? I have imported a few now. Just imported a mint m50 boulevard cruiser. Didnt have time to drive 8hrs each way to get it so had it delivered to Niagara NY for $350,,, met transport company in Walmart parking lot and loaded bike to my trailer and brought it to U.S customs for the U.S inspection and then crossed with no issue at Canadian side. Few days later all complete and within a week had the compliance label. Certified and insured today, and on the road!!

Try ebay, or http://www.searchtempest.com/ or http://craiglook.com/ .

I'd start with www.cycletrader.com and use 14305 as the area code (it's Niagara Falls NY) pick a bike type and start searching.

As for transport use the search function TFX will do it for you.

What if your buying a US bike but it has a lien on it, but when a deposit is put on it then they will take the lien off? Would it show up crossing the border that a lien is on it? or could i just pay him in full and let him take care of his lien?
Any ideas in regards to this? thanks!
