Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

I just imported BMW motorcycle from US at the end of October. I got "Warranty Vehicle Enquiry" letter from US dealership for free, and RIV accepted it without questions. $565 for a piece of paper???? I think it's too much...

I had letter, but it was not approved by RIV, dealer did not want to give me other documents.
I considered the $500 extra bill into price of bike.

Just the warning, to check for clearance letter, and calculate the price into final expense list.

I called RIV prior to importing the bike and was told, that they only accept 2 types of letter from dealerships as "Recall Clearance":
1. Warranty Vehicle Inquiry
2. Vehicle History Printout
If you have anything but these letters, RIV won't accept it, and you'll have pay BMW Canada $500 + tax, which I consider as BMW's way to welcome you in :). In other words, just legally steal your money!

yes I had the same info.
Just my bike was already imported into Canada, and I had letter that was not requested by me.
I talked one USA dealership to issue me warranty information, but since bike was ex police bike, the warranty info was not available.

Just imported my 05 m50 suzuki boulevard last week from NH. Shipped it to Niagara falls NY and transfered it to my trailer and a trouble free crossing. All went smooth for my second importing. Just waiting on the Inspection form now.

Watch out while importing Hondas! US Honda does not want to provide Recall Release Letters considering import to Canada as gray market.

Question, what EXACTLY is required in order to pass the federal inspection?

Is it just; DRL, Km/h speedo, US compliance sticker and stamped VIN?

Anything else? Horn, signals, brake lights, licence plate light?

Only reason I'm asking is I have a track bike that I imported, for which I'd like to get a clean ontario ownership as I have all the stock parts. If I don't need to change certain things, I'd rather not.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

what sort of info is required on the Form 1 - Vehicle Import Form that you fill out for Canada customs?

buyer/seller info, bike make, model country of manufacter?

Call the contact number on the RIV site, they know about Honda USA not giving out recall letters.

Hello everyone!

I'm one of those lurkers that gained some real benefit from reading all of these posts prior to importing my bike.

I began reading this thread while trying to import a new, 2009, BMW G450X. I was able to get the dealer to fax me a Warranty History Letter for this bike, and, I included two Websites, Transport Canada and the USA equivilent as evidence that the bike complied with RIV Recall Letter rules. The short of it was, they sent me the generic letter stating that only two forms of statements would qualify for the Recall Letter. In other words, they wanted BMW Canada to get their blood money as so many of you describe it! After several phone calls and a few emails I gave up on that bike, ...... FOR NOW.

Instead, I purchased a 2008 Honda XR650L with 898 miles on it from Chicago. I asked RIV if I had to provide the Recall Letter and they said YES, but that they would look after it as it was available from the Internet at, American Honda Owners Link, USA, that was good enough for them. I plugged my VIN number into American Honda Owners Link and it came up as "no recalls" for my bike". Cool. Make a copy of this.

Website: https://www.ahm-ownerlink.com/SEO/H...Status=VIN NO RECALLS&recallId1=NO RECALL IDS

I filled out the Export Document for the Customs Border guys (obtained at their Website: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/mi/3802.xml
U.S. Customs & Border Protection Vehicle Export Cover Sheet

for (Port Huron), got a copy of the Cert. of Title from the owner. Here's where it got interesting. The fax number for Port Huron was given to me by their customer service people and shown on the Website as 1-810-982-2704 or "For Vehicle Exportations FAX documents to Blue Water Bridge at (810) 982-2704)"

We had the documents but couldn't get through to this Fax number after countless tries, so I called their desk and the guy said to use the 1-810-985-6070, (note this number shows up on their Website 4 times on the first screen).

I waited for 72 to hours to lapse, called their desk to see if the bike was approved to come into Canada, I was told they won't tell me that, too many requests, so I left for Chicago to pickup the bike anyway, drove to the border and asked to process my "export" Honda. He said he didn't have the paperwork from me and requested the Fax as proof that I sent it. I showed him the Fax confirmation and he rejected it as it wasn't "the" Fax number they use, "they probably thru it out". I said I faxed it, he asked who I talked to, I didn't remember, he said he can't do the paperwork. I said that Fax number leads to this office, he checked, asked for the Cert of Title and processed it by doing the 72 hour VIN research in under 10 secs. and stamped the Cert. .... he sent me on my way saying the Fax machine was 4 ft away from him.

(FYI - Pull over to the left before you cross the bridge and head left to the first building, if you are wondering where the building is.)

Canada was so much better, they looked at the bike, asked me when it was manufactured, "May. 2007", everyone was very helpful and polite and I paid GST and went on my way. Got home, typed in the info into the RIV Canada forms to register, 3 hours later, I got my Inspection Form to take to Canadian Tire, complete with an approved Recall Letter compliance!!

That's it, I didn't need photo-copies, I didn't need anything much on the USA side, I did need to prove that I paid for the bike with a Paypal printout, pictures of the bike, proof of sale from EBay, (like all screen prints etc) and proof of Fax to Port Huron Customs, Bill of Sale, GST payment, Cert. of Title. The woman at the Canadian side said I had the most documentation she has ever seen, phone numbers etc., so take everything you can think of.

That's it, a simple trip, I now have a newer bike and plenty of confidence for my next bike, that BMW!

Good luck!

Does anyone know or remember if the odometer reading is taken at the border by looking at the odometer? Im looking at a bike that has an electrical issue and doesnt power up right now, but dont remember if they took it down when I imported my other bike.

Speaking from my experience, that's a Form 2 issue, at the border, they are interested in exportation documentation and an initial payment of GST, not much else at this stage. They never looked at the speedo on either side of the border.

Form 1 does not provide for a speedo reading and the US side didn't look at the bike at all, rather, they check the VIN number for any outstanding liens or whether it is stolen. Mileage has not being a factor so far and I'm on my way to Canadian Tire for the VIN check next. GL

So, I'm importing a bike next week and I'm a little confused about the US side...They are telling me that I can only get the title stamped weekdays, no weekend service. This is at the Lewiston crossing. I've imported at Detroit on a Saturday....is this something new?
What a pain...

Apparently The Detroit crossing is open 24/7 whereas the Lewiston crossing is business hours Mon-Fri.

The Niagara region vehicle crossing point for Canadian-bound vehicles is the Lewiston crossing. You can fax documents there at any time, but for US vehicle export inspections, hours are basically 8am to 4pm Monday through Friday. If you have a choice, the Detroit crossing does vehicle export inspections 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Hey thanks for the reply, I forgot to hit the submit button when I first read your post lol :)

Anyone know how I can spot the US side that I have to check in at the Detroit border we missed it last time I went through lol

Perfect, thanks!

When I came across the lady on the Canadian side said if they caught you skipping their office (the US guys) its a $5000 fine but the Canadians don't enforce it.

Going there this weekend :D

This is the one we missed?
Add info - If you miss it you can circle back from Canadian side following the container trucks.

Hey Jeepin,

I tried 6 times to post a private message to you but the site won't send it through so I'll post it here and hope you get it:

Hi Jeepin,

I got my Recall Letter from the Honda Owner Link, it was publically accessible and I typed in the VIN number and screen saved the result so you might be able to do that. If not, call RIV Canada Recall Department and ask them if you'll need the Recall Letter as they are able to do that search themselves for Jap bikes. They'll tell you right away when you give them the bike specs.

The RIV Forms are completed as follows, Form I is handed to you on the Canadian side of the border when you cross with your bike and register it at Customs and pay your 5% GST on the Bill of Sale. They then issue the form and tell you to get online and register with RIV Canada for this purchase and pay the $ 204.50/CDN for the Form II document fee. They emailed the Form II to me 2 hours after paying online!

The Form II document mentions items that your bike "might" need to be altered in order to pass the Canadian Tire Form II National inspection. Mine needed nothing and my stop at CT took 15 mins.

The US border is the tricky part, you need to provide all of the necessary documentation, the Cert. of Title fully filled out with his information and yours, the Bill of Sale, his full information, VIN number, your full information. I'll use Buffalo as an example:

http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/ny/0901.xml

The contact information is there, please fax to the right place and give them 72 hours to process it as requested, even though, they need 15 seconds to do the actual work. US Export Group is a strange bunch and you need to have all of your paperwork in order with them.

Forms Website:
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/basic_trade/export_docs/

This is the Form that I sent along with the Title and Bill of Sale:
Auto Export Worksheet
- 06/26/2009
spacerclear.gif
doc - 495 KB.
spacerclear.gif

I filled it out as completely as I could, sent along a cover letter with the VIN on it and my name so they could match all the documents up. And then you wait 72 hours and hope for the best when you get there with the bike!

Good luck and let me know how you make out,

Can anyone tell me what the two things in the red boxes mean? The RO is told me the title is clean and clear but this has me confused. Thanks!

Under "Brand/Legend" it says "Duplicate"

And at the top of the title it says "This is a duplicate certificate and may be subject to the rights of a person under the original certificate odometer mileage from original certificate"

Another thing I just did a quick search of this thread and it looks like Ambassador bridge doesnt run on weekends for importing vehicles? only sarnia? can anyone quickly confirm or deny lol im on low sleep, thanks!
