Importing a Motor Vehicle To Canada (the be all end all)

Actually the dealer that I purchased the bike from did give me the recall letter, although they will never admit it! lol

That is the case now apparently for BMW cars, as well..it is another tactic to get Cdns to buy in Canada...Did you call BMW Can or USA??? Should be USA...if they tell you the same thing...try a BMW dealer or 2 (I would ask the dealer where I bough it or if private get the vendor to ask their dealer..A letter from an authorized dealer on their letterhead is all you will need.
Good Luck

My insurance company will not insure my bike until I have it registered in Ontario. Anyone else have this problem? Will I be able to register it without insurance?

I had the same problem. I was replacing an existing bike on the same policy, so I just went and registered the new (US) bike with the MTO, using the same policy number. That got me an Ontario ownership and transferred my Ontario plates to the new bike. I put the plates on the new bike, rode it to my insurer, and got it insured.

I PM'd you. Get in touch if you need some help.

Duster thanks for the reply! I have a policy with them already on another bike so it sounds like I just have to give MTO this policy number as I will be adding this bike to the same policy.

Very interesting thread. Here' s a question I'm not sure I've seen covered yet: For a new purchase from a dealer I could imagine using visa to pay. But if I'm buying used for 6-8k US most sellers there would want a certified cheque from a US bank, don't they?

Not sure how to go about that, and don't want to carry a huge roll of US greenbacks down when picking it up either!

Just get a bank draft in US funds.

It's cash or monetary instruments. If you aren't sure what monetary instruments are declare it. Cuz saying some unknown customs officer told me it wasn't cash wont help you when your cash and vehicle is seized and you're standing at the border SOL.;)

My contribution to this thread:

aacb.com - Customs brokers (out of BC)
jcmotors.com - shippers

Thats all you need, they will guide you through the process.

I need some help here.
I am looking at buying a chinese sport bike off a copmany in the US.
It's a smaller 200cc and perfect for the wife.
It is available to be liscenced in the US in most states other than CA.
The company tells me they ship these bikes to Canada all the time but to do so I have to get my own when I look on the RIV site it is not listed and when I call they say not admissable.
The price diference compare to a smaller honda or that is thousands. Is it possible to get this little sport bike in and registered?

Just to clarify, being a noob to this, do you need insurance if your taking the bike over the border on a trailer???

Thanks!!!!!!

I found this forum via another forum and it's truly a godsend! I'd like to thank everyone here for their contribution and figured I might try to add something that may help people still confused over duties. I see that there is still some confusion as per a few pages prior to this one in this thread.

For clarification, please open the following link (pdf):

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/tariff2007/t2007-1/ch87ne.pdf

Search for 'motorcycle' and under Chapter 87.11, you'll find that no duties are charged on any type of motorcycle coming from the US (regardless of where it was manufactured). For those you who still aren't sure after reading this, you can always double-check with customs by phoning them at 1-800-461-9999 during regular business hours.

Can someone maybe add this link to the first post? I know that a lot of people might be worried about how much they'll have to put aside for duties and this might help them alleviate their concerns.

I have a question now that I was hoping someone could help me with. If I want to buy a bike in the US and have the funds available in my CAD bank, what would be the most efficient way to make this purchase (ex. best exchange rate, lowest fees)?

Thanks,

CM

My best guess would be a US bank draft/money order from the bank. If you are prefer cash then change it at the bank I find that most banks don't charge for money exchange and the ones that do don't charge as much as a place like money mart etc.

I've been looking into buying a new Bike in the states and getting it shipped to Toronto. MOst likely a ninja 650R... How much does it cost to bring it across the border, for shipping and taxes on the bike? Is it better to do it like that or just to buy it here?

does anyone know if you can import an older bike from a state that does not issue titles for that year
an example is Connecticut, they don;t issue titles for car/bikes older than 15 or 20 years i forget
there is a 1969 honda cb750 that i would ahve bought if i knew what can be done
