Im buying a truck..

I have no idea how anyone who owns motorcycles ever makes it without owning a truck or van.

I've managed quite well for the past 29 years without them. Ok, I did own two trucks during that time frame, but never used either of them for motorcycle transport. Nowadays if I need to do a dump run I just line the back of the Jeep with a tarp first.

I see the Nissan Frontier is available in crew cab long bed form. Long bed is just over 6ft (gate up), and they have the built in sliding anchor tracks. I was checking them out a couple months ago and the prices seemed pretty decent for a new one. They're late in the life cycle, so they keep adding items as "standard features" to keep the interest. Not bad bang-for-buck, but I don't think that V6 is much better on fuel than a completely up-to-date V8

6ft is too short, my Tundra is 6-1/2 and I still have to put most sport bikes on a slight angle to close the tailgate

It's a bit over 6ft + gate down and bed extender (also a "standard feature" now I believe) should give over 7ft.

True but I prefer to close and lock the bed, so no extended or crew cabs for me personally....If the bed extender has a lock then thats not so bad

With the features they're including now, and the current pricing, they don't seem like such a bad deal, but that just means there's either a new one in the works or they're going to discontinue it.

Ive got the new 2011 F150 V6 turbo eco boost engine .. it has power like a diesel yet sips fuel almost like a honda civic and tows just as much if not more than most V8's.

You really want at the very minimum a 6.5 ft bed .. most bikes wont fit properly in a short bed.

Nice try..

.. ahh never mind.

"almost like" doesnt mean "exactly"

But i guess you caught that in my post the first time there keyboard commando

Not trying to be a keyboard commando at all. You made a ludicrous statement. And I wasn't even going to point out the HUGE difference in fuel economy (since I hate to beg the obvious) but then you had to make your remark about not owning so I couldn't possibly know that the fuel economy isn't close. Nothing personal in anyway, it's just that the truck gets mileage nothing like a civic as I had suggested earlier.

Pretty damn close to Civic fuel economy, and buy in price, and hell of a lot more reason to own it. It'll do anything the Civic will and a whole lot more. You'd have to drive a CIvic alot to make the savings in fuel worth anything. I spent almost 9 grand last yr on fuel, and I still wouldn't trade the usefulness of a truck for an econobox, becasue I'd also have to accept all of the crappy limitations that come with the econobox. No thx.

I have no idea how anyone who owns motorcycles ever makes it without owning a truck or van. A truck has so many uses, from hauling furniture to yard waste to broken motorcycles to renovation materials to trackbikes to the track, on and on. If I could only have one cage, it'd be a full size truck or van above all else.

I agree with you on the versatility of a truck. My 1.8T jetta gives me 13.6km/L or 7.5L/100km which I find decent for about 60% highway 40% city. I have a folding trailer which has already paid for itself in usefullness and in saving me money on renting an alternative. It folds up and doesn't take too much space in my garage. I am happy with it. When I move to my new house it will sit under an awning until I need to use it, and that's it.

If I could get a 1.9TDI engine into a 4x4 ford ranger or chevy S10 that would be my dream vehicle. Decent mileage with all the practicality of a pick up. with aftermarket engine tuning (only about $300-400) those engines make 250+ ftlbs... not bad at all.

Okay so after literally ripping through copious amounts of reviews, and comparing all options available to me, I feel that the AV will suite my needs, just as well as a f150 (physically). I just need to get myself a ReadyRamp, and that solves both the ramp issue, and bed extender.

The ONLY reason I am not jumping all over a full size truck is that MOST of the time I won't be using it for anything other than driving around, I think the AV will give me best of both worlds. And another bonus is the DOD engine (5.3) the fuel economy it gets doesn't bother me. I have owned several turbo'd machines, and the engines were never the problem, other smaller things kept creeping up, so I am wary of Turbo engines.

This is an older model as an example, and the tailgate according to GM capable of holding 500-1000lbs... I'm going to head out and test drive a few, and start bargaining...

if you do choose to go with a ford, stay the hell away from the 5.4L triton engine... its a disaster. i have an automotive machine shop, and between those ford 5.4's and and the german cars we stay in business. easily the most common engines we rebuild.

Sure, but in very limited quantities from the sounds of it, and possibly with the whole importation/dealer arrangements in limbo/legal issues?

I just checked http://mahindratruckforum.com/ via google.. not a lot scanned over, but lots of red flags with forum titles about three class-actions against Mahindra, abysmal mileage compared to claimed averages and a "2 star accident ratings for the (2007 Australian market) double cab model http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJBidyh3CNQ Yikes!

Don't know if i would want to be buying into this new-manufacturer on North American shores quagmire. Be sorta like buying into Hyundai in '84 all over again, but worse.

I just upgraded my primary car from the Toyota Yaris, to a more practical Toyota Tacoma Access Cab base model. Nothing fancy or flashy. 2.7L 4 cyl motor mated to a 5 speed tranny is getting me ~27 mpg, a few points above EPA average. It'll do all i want it to do, whether towing my 1700 lb loaded bike trailer, or stuff a bike or two in back. For the amount of times that i'll do it in a year, it'll do it. The rest of the year, it serves as a reasonable-cost commuter and hardware store runner, in overall terms of carrying a loan, insurance, maintenance, and gas costs.

Certainly beats stuffing the occasional barn-finds into the cramped confines of the economically stellar, but somewhat less than versatile Toyota Yaris that i had left behind at the dealer. I did miss having the pickup trucks or vans, that i've had in the past. By the same token, i did not want to be re-experiencing the comparably horrible mileage that my F150 and Safari had, either. The Tacoma, at this time, appeared to be a good bet in what is an actually shrinking small/mini truck market segment. Ford isn't modernizing it's Ranger, rumors are that the Dakota might be discontinued, and Toyota has lost sales on it's light trucks over the past few years etc etc..

I really don't think that the Mahindra sounds like all that wise a buy for the first few years of official importation.. JMHO..

And all for fiddy dollahs!

This is probably WAY overkill for what you describe your needs are, but I traded my Jeep for a Power Wagon earlier this spring. If you do any sort of off-roading, it's one of the best trucks you can buy properly equipped right from the factory. From factory, comes with 12,000lbs winch, front and rear diff lockers, larger tires, 4" lift, beefy suspension/skid plates, etc. I also have a tonneau cover that I haul my bikes/toys on, although it would be tougher hauling street bikes up there. With the diff lockers, it's almost impossible to get stuck so you can really find some off-the-beaten-track places to ride if that's your thing.
