Ian Thompson acquitted

A well written piece. I wonder what the report for the star would read like?

This comment is rather enlightening:

Once upon a time, there
used to be beautiful, peaceful and friendly community (Niagara Region). The
local police department (NRP) and Crown attorneys were very humble and treated
the community with respect and dignity. If there was ever a complaint, the
local police and Crown Attorney would diffuse the situation by examining the
evidence thoroughly and practice due diligence.
The local police and the Crown attorneys kept the community very happy
by doing their job.

One day greed and corruption started seeping
into the lexicon of the local police department and Crown attorneys. The local police and Crown attorneys startedlooking at their paychecks instead of helping and paying attention to their
community. The local police officers found out that overcharging the community
with frivolous charges=more arrest= job promotion and pay rise. The local police even cheated on the promotion
exams for more money. On the other hand, Crown attorneys discovered a clogged
court room full of innocent people made it look like they were working and produced
pockets full of money for their friends, the defense lawyers which= job
promotion for the Crown attorney. One Crown
attorney was even appointed as a Judge. Police and the Crown would go celebrate
their corruption and greed by eating and drinking like a kings and smirking at
the peasants. As a result, the friendly, Niagara Residence were soon discarded.

Sadly, the cycle of greed
and corruption continued in Niagara Region to epic levels, but one day the
residence started to question the local police and Crown attorneys regarding
their actions. Niagara Region residence marched against the tyranny, corruption
and hypocrisy. A couple of the citizens were brave and told the police that
they were corrupt but were charged with contempt of cop and were soon faced
with tasers, fists and endless court appearance. Other residences protested the
great powers, but were also held in contempt. Hope was almost lost when a new
hero emerged: truth.

For a long time the Crown
attorneys and police discovered that lying was the only game in town. When
confronted with truth the Crown attorneys and police didn`t know what to do.
They saw it as something that would hinder their corruption and greed. So, the
Crown attorneys and police had a plan. They would use propaganda to make
themselves look good. Local newspapers became full NRP stories: Last driver in
funeral procession charged and fined $350 dollars going through red light. Man
defends home from thugs and next day charged with failure to store firearms and
costs him his life savings. New $180000 surveillance cameras in downtown core
are never working. Photographer charged with assault after photographer stops
officers fist with his face. Local police union very happy that officer still
collecting salary, 6 years after giving secrets to Hells Angels. Niagara police
tax payers facing 10 of millions in lawsuits.

In the end, the propaganda backfired. The local
community moved out in droves and tourist no longer flocked to Niagara Region
because fear. The police couldn’t find anyone to over charge and the
Crown attorneys took up checkers kept collecting their $170, 000 dollar salary.
So the police and the Crown started to charge charge each other. Local newspapers reported. Local police officer
wins 3.1 million lawsuit. 1.1 million dollar lawsuit filed by dismissed officer.

Dear folks, this is no laughing matter. Please stay away from Niagara.

Don't understand the charge of unsafe storage since Thomson was home at the time. Firearm is safer in his night table, where he can use it to defend himself (and its theft) than in a locker somewhere.

So a guy comes home takes his firearm out of storage and puts it in his night table. When he leaves home he puts it back into storage. How can this be be unsafe storage?

If this is unsafe storage you'd never be able to take the firearm out of storage to e.g. clean it.

You can take your firearms out of safe storage to prepare them for transport, clean them and admire them. What they got Iain on and subsequently cost him $60K to defend himself over was....

[h=1]STORAGE OF RESTRICTED FIREARMS[/h]6. An individual may store a restricted firearm only if

  • (a) it is unloaded;
  • (b) it is
    • (i) rendered inoperable by means of a secure locking device and stored in a container, receptacle or room that is kept securely locked and that is constructed so that it cannot readily be broken open or into, or
    • (ii) stored in a vault, safe or room that has been specifically constructed or modified for the secure storage of restricted firearms and that is kept securely locked; and

I'm very happy for Thompson, I feel terrible this probably cost him many thousands to defend himself from what amounts to ridiculousness. Reading the Crowns arguements to support the charges makes you wish there was a way to fire a crown prosecutor for total incompetence. Sadly he'll lick his wounds and console himself with that 100k+ salary.

They didn't get him on it

They didn't get him on it

No, but they did mess up his life. Estimated 60k in defence costs. The fact he was not convicted ends but the fact he was charged with a firearms offence stays on his file. Travel to the US could be an issue, it will show the charge when they scan his passport.

My question is could he launch a civil suit against the 4 that torched his house, I'm sure there is insurance and a victims fund somewhere for hard costs but what about recouping his legal fees or does he remain a victim of the system?

A ridiculous situation and something that should have resulted in a "no prospect of conviction" from the word go. The charge and prosecution for improper storage was based on an unprovable assumption, when there was evidence present that proper storage was being used. I'm glad it's finally over for him and hope that he can recover against The Crown, in some way.

It was nothing more than a witch hunt. They wanted to make Ian an example of. I swaer to god they would have given him a parkibg ticket if tgey thought it wouldtarnish him. In the end the gov does not want you to stand up and defend yourself. They would rather read about a house fire with the victim burned to death in a fetal position.

They just hate ppl w/ guns. So they want to deter anybody who want to ever think about getting firearms to think twice. They want to show the public a hanging

He was punished with a HEFTY legal bill for having the audacity to defend himself instead of lying down and hoping the flames hurt less than the legal ringer they put him through. That's the message that our "justice" system is sending us.

Fortunately members of the National Firearms Association, the Canadian Sports Shooting Association and canadiangunnutz.com banded together and paid most of that bill

I know about the contributions from the CGN community, but it's not something that every homeowner who gets attacked by thugs could/should count on.
