I think global warming is an understatement, I think what you can expect to see in the future is more severe weather conditions. Hotter hots, colder colds, stronger winds, periods of drought followed by flood and possibly famine. Basically the world is going to go to heck in a hand basket but I probably won't be around by then so good luck with it.
 
It's not an understatement when we live in a world where a leader of the free world still publicly claims that clean coal exists ....

See if you can change the programming to keep the water temperature lower during the day (mid and peak electricity rates) and then increase it back to normal level at 7PM. This assumes you're using it primarily in the evenings in the winter. As long as it has enough power to reheat rapidly this can be a big energy saver, focusing on the off-peak rates.

But yes, hot tubs cost a lot to run. I decided not to run ours for the last few winters because I was the only one using it (wife hates going out in the cold and snow to get to and from it) and it was a waste. This year, that turned out to be a good decision, especially since ours is an older plug-and-play model that can't heat up fast, so I'd have to leave it at 104 all the time, 24/7.

It's also a source of heat in the summer when you least want it, and cooling is WAY more expensive than heating.

Both examples are also horribly inefficient "heat sources" in the grand scheme of things - if you heat with just about any other source of energy (natural gas being the primary one) you're far better off.

700W toaster is crazy ... Even 100W incandescent bulb is a load for normal human being hard to overcome for reasonably long time.
 
A normal person could not keep a flat screen tv powered up through a 30 minute tv show.

My last FTP Test was 276 Watts. So if I did a proper warm up I could watch TV for 20 minutes then puke and fall off the bike. Sounds like fun!
 
Yeah, using a toaster for that test is silly. Resistive heat loads are amongst the biggest energy pigs.

I think it makes sense. It's a medium-worst case scenario but most of us have toasters, coffee makers.

It would be neat to have data on his caloric expenditure during that demonstration

It’s just a demonstration to show how much energy a simple toaster uses. I think a lot of us take it for granted and don’t really appreciate what the power requirements are for basic household appliances.

Calories wouldn’t be that high simply because the duration was so short. For two minutes I *might* be able to hold 400 Watts. Roughly half what RF was holding and I’m a fairly strong cyclist. RF is arguably the strongest sprint cyclist who has ever lived and he can barely run a toaster.

What would be the caloric intake from the piece of toast? Or the six pack of jelly donuts I would eat after making the toast?

Also he could have made two slices unless it was a one slice toaster.

Set up an abandoned warehouse with excercise bikes and generators, let the meth heads in for cold weather shelter, peddle like heck and a meth tab drops down a pipe, they'll go for days.
Solves homeless winter shelter, low cost electric and keeps all the tweakers in one spot. Build it in Hamilton.

If they had used a single slice toaster for the single slice of toast, it would have required 350W and Robert would have burned it to a crisp.

I think they did disable half the toaster a toaster normally takes 1500w 350 would take forever to make a slice.
