How to do police work right

Simple idea, sounds like an easy one to implement. Cities in Canada already have lots of social workers, why don’t social workers just handle cases as the lead? Scoop a cop if the situation needs security?

i dont think the police union would like it very much

Police union and management will roadblock and sandbag of course. There also needs to be a transition from here to there as with any new approach.

But all said and done it can for sure be done better than today AND way cheaper. There is no doubt and many examples the world over.

Why modify it already?

Limited number social workers (underfunded) have trouble dealing with the current workloads, cannot deal with more. While in Toronto, what are we a ~billion dollars and roughly a quarter of our entire city budget goes to TPS?

What I don't get is why anyone in general would be oppose a lower cost solution? Unless they have skin in the game on the waste of course...or just like the bust heads approach.

It's too late for the Yatim family.

It's a great idea until a social worker gets killed on the job. We need more support for people with mental health issues so they are not out on the streets to begin with making it an issue the police have to deal with. Not letting them out on the streets and causing the issue for the social worker to respond to after the fact and possibly putting both their lives in danger. Deal with the issue and provide the care/funding up front would lessen the number of calls the police have to respond to and ultimately save money by not having to hire more officers.

Because in the time it takes to "scoop a cop" the social worker could already be dead.

Nailed it. The vast majority of homeless people you see on the streets of downtown TO ought to be institutionalized. It would also help if we institutionalized the habitual druggies/junkies, at least temporarily, instead of the current setup where the east side of downtown is basically a free-for-all. But these things cost big $$$ and no one wants to do it.
