Kentucky town hires social workers instead of more officers - and the results are surprising
Faced with a tight budget and rising demands on its police department, a city in Kentucky tried something different.
You mean if we hadn't turned out all of the mentally ill onto the streets, we wouldn't have as many problems today? Who'd of thunk it.![]()

Simple idea, sounds like an easy one to implement. Cities in Canada already have lots of social workers, why don’t social workers just handle cases as the lead? Scoop a cop if the situation needs security?

Limited number social workers (underfunded) have trouble dealing with the current workloads, cannot deal with more. While in Toronto, what are we a ~billion dollars and roughly a quarter of our entire city budget goes to TPS?
What I don't get is why anyone in general would be oppose a lower cost solution? Unless they have skin in the game on the waste of course...or just like the bust heads approach.

It's a great idea until a social worker gets killed on the job. We need more support for people with mental health issues so they are not out on the streets to begin with making it an issue the police have to deal with. Not letting them out on the streets and causing the issue for the social worker to respond to after the fact and possibly putting both their lives in danger. Deal with the issue and provide the care/funding up front would lessen the number of calls the police have to respond to and ultimately save money by not having to hire more officers.
