How often do you lube your chain?

So Ted from Rosey Toes told me I need to lube my chain everytime I need refill my tank of gas (so basically every 250km approx). Not that i have an issue doing this, it's just the grease that mucks up my rims is a pain in the *** to remove.

So how often do you guys do it? Also, how often do you clean your chain?

About every tank, or more frequently depends on road conditions.

250km is overkill.

Lube every 500km or immediately after riding in the rain. Clean every 1000km.

Once every tank of gas is a little often, but it doesn't hurt if you don't overdo it and you use the right lube.

Dupont Teflon Multi-use - ~$6/can at Lowes.

Also, with the right lube you won't have to clean the chain much. Once a year is fine with me, every 1,000Km would be 25-50 times a year :).

Yeah, i've read once every 500km (every other refuel) elsewhere too. Ted and Vlad are right that you can't overdo it other than to waste lube and make a mess as you (the OP) mentioned.

Am going down to Florida in late June (~7,000km round trip) and we'll probably lube the chains every evening when touring.

When I'm touring I spray the chain with some WD40 and quickly wipe the grime off then lube it before parking for the night. This allows me to check the tension as well. If it's more than a 500 KM day I give it another shot of lube at the lunch break. Every tank seems a bit excessive but good chain maintenance really does extend it's life. It's a dirty pain of a job (especially at the end of a long day in the saddle) but required.

Every thousand or so

If you buy the chain cleaner it also works well to clean the lube that gets sprayed on the rim.

When its dry.

Anyone in the GTA (Don Valley/Richmond Hill/Aurora/Newmarket is preferred) wanna show me tonight how to do it on my own? So far I've been getting someone to help me whenever I do it but this is causing an issue where I'm going up to 2400km between lubes. What's the best oil for the chain?

So the way that everyone does this on their own is with a back stand? I guess I'm going to have to go get one... Hence the second person required. One walker, one sprayer. Is the crappy tire one okay or is there a recommended option for cruisers?

Buy a motorcycle with a center stand, they're really useful!

I use the C-Tire one, no issue at all.
I lube every 600 clean every 1200km's

You can spray part of the chain and walk it forward spray again repeat until finished. This is what I will have to do when touring. And I lube every 500-1000 KM. When touring I will do it when I am done for the day.

I use Motul Chain Cleaner and Lube

Cheers,
Geoff

I generally subscribe to the 500/1000 lube/clean rule in addition to after rain, wash, dirt, etc. But in all honesty I'm terrible at sticking to that schedule.

I'd like to find a spraycan of the DuPont Multi-use w/ dry wax if I can find it just to give me some insurance for those times I forget. My current chain wax flings off way too quick.

every other tank of gas or right after riding in rain. If you are concerned about fling - just find better lube.

If you're going to use chain lube it would probably be a good idea to clean the chain every 2nd time you lube to avoid buildup. WD-40 does a great job on wheels but spray it on a shop towel or rag, not directly on the wheel.
