How many hours are you productive for?

@Mad Mike I didn't post to start a war about teachers' salaries, benefits etc., however, just wanted to add to the conversation about productivity...perhaps I shouldn't have started my post the way I did...at any rate, our salary is based on 194 days and our day with the kids is 300 minutes (at least in elementary it is, I know nothing about HS)...I get a 40 minute prep period per day to do administrative work (if the teacher doesn't get pulled to cover a class that is without a supply, and this past year, trust me, it happened quite often, as OTs didn't want to work in Covid times)...in elementary we also have to do yard duty so add in 80 minutes per week, so there goes at least 5 recesses where I can't go to the bathroom (try holding it from 9:20 am to 11:50 am and tell me it's easy)...the average salary is NOT $108K, it takes years and I mean years (12 with my board) to get to max, which is just shy of $100K...starting teachers are more around the $45K mark...

@Dimitri the contract negotiations back in 2017 (IIRC) took away those 20 days and knocked them down to 11...we used to be able to roll them over from year to the next if not used...some boards were allowed to get a payout for their accumulated sick day bank (IIRC the public ones were), however the Catholic boards lost them...police and fire fighters I believe also have this benefit, so it's not strictly teachers

I've said it in other threads before, if you think we have it so easy, go get your BEd. or MEd (which is what I have) and become a teacher...I've had two successful careers in the past before getting into teaching at 37 and trust me, it's not the walk in the park that everyone thinks it is...
I don’t think it’s a war. I don’t think anyone challenges how hard teachers work while on the job.

I taught in the private sector for years, have lots of acquaintances and some family in the profession. I also taught children in a volunteer basis for nearly 3 decades, I know how hard the work is.

It would be great if we all had the same schedule, pay and workload. But that’s not possible, economically it wouldn’t work.

i guess my question is, as a taxpayer is the value in line with the cost? Or has the power of 200000 votes as a block been able to carve out something special for themselves that the average Joe can’t get… but is expected to pay for.

Don't get mad at teachers... They're just smarter than a lot of us.
Don't work hard. Work smart.
As for me... in my 30+ years at my job I have "produced" nothing.
I like to say I get paid not for what I do, but for what I may be called upon to do.
'Helps me sleep.
On the couch.

In the staff lounge.

If it wasn't for the back to back to back to back meetings from 8am to 5pm...I'd get a whole lot more done.

It's literally ridiculous about how many meetings we have. Like insanity. I hate it. And it makes me question my decision to leave my FIFO job to come here to work for the gov't.

With the meetings...I'm happy if I get 1-2hrs of actual productive time in.

Without meetings...5-6hrs of production.

Ok, taking that into perspective, “productivity “ is probably much less. So many meetings. Then more meetings. Then changes to staffing/clients etc with more meetings.

If I count meetings as 'productive' then I'm at 7-8hrs/day....but I'm not. They're useless for the most part.

I hate them with a passion. And now more meetings are starting at 8am, and at 5pm (those I reject), and of course the 12pm meetings....like eff off people.

This is literally the worst part of my job. At least when we go back to the office (apparently July for x days/week) I'll just leave at 4pm because I'm not going to do the same amount of meetings and THEN drive home for an hour....eff that.

'oh you want a 5pm meeting while I drive home? why don't you just GFY'

Oh it’s lunch, let’s have a meeting. Don’t get me wrong, I generally put in way more hours than required but I hate meetings at the few times in my day that should be mine if it’s not important

One person actually had the audacity to say (at 6pm) ‘oh I have no life I can work like this every day’

I hung up the call after that comment. Just cause you have no life….doesn’t mean we all want to be here.

Told my boss ‘if you’re expecting me to work 12-14hr days you either bump my salary or just let me know and I’ll give you my notice now and go back to BC’

maybe that makes me a bad employee, but the hell I’ll be pulling those hours every day because they can’t get their stuff in order.

From my experience, the vast majority of my coworkers are demotivated, retarded, or just flat out don't care; this includes the "I workz 19 hours a day, have a b33r b3lly, and no life" types lol All workplaces appear the same.

I've found making friends with the smartest guys, contributing, then intentionally leading a major project make you irreplaceable. I'd argue most problems are also created by others underperforming lol

Haven't worked more than 40 hours a week over a decade doing the above =D

Personally or professionally? Measured by whom? Others or yourself?

I’m highly productive for my employer. I was relatively unproductive at the beginning of my career and became more productive as my knowledge and experience accumulated.

I’m valued at work, well paid and have a great balance between career and personal life.

I could earn more at the expense of time with my family, spouse and myself.

Likely this is due to my own high standards and insecurity about my abilities that keeps me focused and constantly evaluating my worth to both my employer and personal life.

Personally, I’m less productive but much depends on the demands I put on myself in comparison to the demands placed on me by others.

I don’t equate productivity to the number of widgets I can make or how much time I spend at a given task. It’s unproductive to me to give it much thought.

My work speaks for itself by the end result on a regular basis.

Lastly, I gave up looking at others to compare their abilities against my own competencies, intelligence etc as it’s a waste of time. While not a religious person, the serenity prayer has been an excellent guide.

And time provided me with wisdom to realize you cannot change other people but, you sure can change yourself.

What was the question again?

I believe the original question was "What kind of oil should I use in my motorcycle?"
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Please try to focus on the question at hand!

that BC heat must be making you squirrelly in the brain.

The one from last season. Use the filter from the pile of used filters too. Big brain methods to save money! /s
