How far is too far?

Psssst. If you live in downtown Toronto, the bulk of rush hour traffic is going the other way

You answer your phone on vacation?

NOPE. I'll read the email when i'm back home/hotel room wifi thank you.

Then again, i prefer the vacation where there's no cell phone reception to begin with.

Commission whore for years and traveled with a SAT phone, still have one. I spent months in the south pacific, being available paid for that stuff. Being in the Andes and answering a call might ruin it for some, but its how i got there.
My wife hates seeing the Iridium phone sitting on the table, and when i pick it up, but her job is in medicine. When she goes home, somebody like her steps in and the hospital carries on. Not so much in my office.

That is the key to making the big bucks: don't work for wages, and don't trade your time for money in a linear fashion.

Get paid to work smarter, not longer and harder.

I commuted to TO for 35 years and expected it to take me about an hour each way. For the first 10 years it was from Brampton, the last 25 from Orangeville. I retired 9 years ago and it was partly due to the worsening traffic congestion and increasing travel times. The biggest contributor to travel time is the time at which you travel. I was fortunate and could start work at 6:30am, which avoided much of the traffic and allowed me to get there in just over an hour. The trip home however, was always at least 1.5 hours, on a good day.

I did this because it was the only way we could afford to buy a house. We could never afford a house in TO, even back in the 80's, so that's why we bought our first one in Brampton. We were fortunate because my wife was able to find jobs in the communities where we lived and didn't need to commute with me.

Just curious what ya'lls thoughts on "piece work" are
Every good company I know of pays by the hour, what if a certain job takes longer than predicted? What if your job involves driving around site to site?

I'm not a mechanic, but I believe auto mechanics do 'piece work'. From what I understand, good mechanics often do the job faster than the ' book time' and therefore can get paid for more hours than they're present for.

The flip side is some companies use piece work to pay less than minimum wage

Good if your good, bad if your bad. If your efficient enough to exceed the expectation you can make decent money. But you have the stress of being under the clock the entire time. The variables are just part of the job - some might get paid travel if it's a decent enough distance and there is demand.

Worked with a few GC's who had drywall subs with crews paid piecework. Guys were always redbull'd up by 9am and naturally everyone was always in their way. Can't recall ever seeing one ever push a broom either. That said it was the only time I've seen someone ceiling mount a 4x10 drywall sheet singlehandedly.

Being behind them on the way to work makes my blood boil.

And farmers in F150s who were up at 4am to milk the chickens and are wandering into town to visit the TSC for something to do.

I had that job  shingle roofing, a dollar a bundle to nail them down, my problem to get to the site and put them on the roof.
It cost me an entire weeks pay to buy my first Bell Star helmet. I rode my mighty TS185 to all the job sites.

Was still a better job then pouring molten lead into high voltage power insulators, because at least it was outdoors. That job paid 6$ per hour.
