How far is too far?

The longest commute I had was 1hr each way on 2 lane highways -- hated it.

My commute is notmally 10km/30 minutes -- these days is about 4m and 5 seconds. Kinda liking the extra time!

Love commuting, Whitby to Downtown Toronto.

Early shifts help with the traffic.

Since March this year it's been a dream, although the DVP is getting heavier every day. Kingston road in the morning is a ghost town.

I commute from Hamilton to Woodbridge. Just about an hour each way. I don’t mind it at all, gives me some time to have a coffee and listen to some music get ready for the day kinda thing. I had a short 20 minute commute for a few months years ago and hated it. Felt like I walked out my front door straight into the office.

I’m actually looking at moving farther from work. After Covid I don’t really care about the commute, I care more about where I am when I’m not working.

My commute is 57km. It can range from 45min-1:15 min. depending on the idiots on the road. Lately it has been 45-50 min every day. I have been doing this commute for 26 years. I'm used to it and it's much more fun on a bike, but if you can work close to home it's obviously worth it.

Ahem..last i checked your commute was a 6 hour flight :p
1 x 6h flight, 1 x 2hr flight, 1 x 1h drive and a 2.5h boat commute.

sometimes if I get lucky I replace the drive and boat with a 45min helicopter flight

If I’m REALLY lucky I leave site at 5am BC time and I’m home by 10pm Toronto time. But everything has to go perfect

You got into a trade right? Are you married or flying solo?

With a trade you can almost live anywhere. I would suggest bailing on the GTA but maybe that’s my bias.

Yes, that is the plan, looking at houses away from the GTA, job I just applied to is in st catherines

If you are working in St Cath it makes no sense to buy an overpriced house in Toronto and deal with Toronto traffic. Get a place somewhere out that way. Just for the heck of it, I searched "real estate welland", and it looks like you can get a house for half of what anything would cost in Toronto and have a bigger lot and a garage. Welland to St Cath is less than half an hour.

Also a good chance at a substantial property value bump as frequent go trains round the corner.

Used to commute to downtown Toronto from Thornhill, drive went from a combined 1.5 to 2.5 hours in a span of three years for only 50km's. Same roads, some times, ughhhh. That was about eight years ago, can't imagine what it is now.

A couple jobs later, started commuting to Whitby. About 45 minutes each way on the 407, zero traffic, ever, unless there was snow of course. Was nice to just set the cruise control and decompress. Mileage was about 120km combined, probably wouldn't want to do it in my own car. That's about the max I would want to do.

I lived ~8km from work. On a good day, the drive was 12 minutes, driveway to desk. On a bad day, it was over an hour.
For part of that period, I had to drive across the Gardiner and back to drop the kids off at day care.
Others came in from Hamilton and Barrie. It can get to you at times.

One thing to keep in mind if you're going to have a long commute and drive, is to not live west of your work.
Otherwise, you'll always be driving into the rising and setting sun.

What sort of work are you looking for? Pm me if you don't want to say publicly..

Well right now I have my G3(gas) so probably something along the lines of an entry level Hvac helper, when things open back up ill be going back to school part time again to take a refrigeration course and also a G2 license

Those look like fun. The one FMJ posted just falls away so quickly and the front pushes badly (and there's normally crap on the road). A bike pushing is not my idea of fun.
I dealt with quite a few of those in the mountains there, not fun in the wet.

When my wife worked at Burnhamhorpe & 427 a co-worker was all excited about the house they bought in Cambridge, a 45 minute drive to work. Yeah on a Saturday. Weekday was twice that.

To start work at 8:00 AM

Up at 5:00 to feed the kids and drop off at babysitters

Drive to work. He had further to go

She gets picked up at 4:30-5:00 and pick up the kids at the babysitters at 6:30-7:00

Feed kids and go to bed at 9:00 to be ready for the next day.

House was up for sale within a year.

A lot of people see the GTA as the holy grail of housing. If you can get in here you can always afford to move out. The reverse isn't usually true. However if you're happy in the Mid Niagara area who cares if your 2000 SF home in Welland is $600 K instead of the same thing in Mississauga at $1.2 million?

Good for you. I regret not getting my gas license. It’s never too late they say....but I can’t afford to drop my pay at this stage in my life. It’s a great trade and you can run your own show soon enough if you hustle and got the brains...and people skills of course.

@bigpoppa sorry for my ignorance, but does the G3 allow you to work with gas furnaces and hot water tanks? if so, we had my hot water tank serviced recently by Reliance and they guy who came was talking about what a great company it is to work for...company van, training and all the hours you want...he was saying young guys in the early stage of their careers were easily making 6 digit incomes...might want to check them out if this is something you're qualified for...

Yes it does, Im applying everywhere I can including reliance, all the good companies are like that, they have work trucks, they encourage you to learn and get as many licenses as possible and even pay for your training, benefits etc

G3 is sort of the entry level helper license, just to get your foot in the door and start working, almost like a gas apprenticeship, you start out with a G3 and all your work has to be checked and signed off by a G2 tech

Once you get some experience and a G2 license you become a full fledged technician

There is also a G1 which lets you work on anything and everything in the province with none/few restrictions that i'm aware of, but because a G2 is enough for most tasks/jobs/clients, most techs get lazy and dont go all the way to a G1
