how do car drivers act around you?

I ride both downtown and suburbia. Can tell you on the 401 DVP I have had cagers cut me off, try to force me out of a lane, force themselves into my lane, tailgate. Down right disgusting behavior that I know they are aware of and doing so purposely...

In suburbia I find people give me more room, lots of distance after passing me.... No real complaints here!

If I ride in Scarborough almost every other Honda civic makes it a race... Who ever races a cruiser anyways. I just let the clown go and enjoy the ride...

I find that when I'm following a bike in my car on the 401, when they let off the gas they slow down way too much (close gearing/high rev range). I just go on the next lane but don't cut them off... but that's only because I know it feels safer for the biker. For it anyone else, they'll cut them off like most of you say.

Generally don't have any trouble with any car driver... they give me the same level of respect as they would any other vehicle. However, I got a pleasant surprise down in Virginia a couple of years ago. Was driving with a small group on an interstate and a large white limousine pulled up beside us - a buxom blonde popped up through the moon roof, whipped her top off and yelled "NICE BIKES!" then the limo sped away. It sure added a little zest to my day (although the fellow behind me nearly rode his bike into the ditch! LOL!)

Honestly; I'm starting to think that due to the sheer volume of cars & people that we encounter everyday on our commutes lends to a pretty high probability of crossing paths with someone who (may or may bot be) in a panicked/distracted mood and just simply make an honest mistake - whether we're in a car or bike.

Being on a motorcycle probably increases the odds of someone else making a mistake, since we tend to move through traffic faster, and are much less visible.

How many of you haven't EVER made a mistake in your driving careers? How many mistakes (minor & major) would you say you make in a month? a week? And how many cars did you pass today during your commute?

The people on the DVP are from the suburbs.
My biggest fear downtown is cabs, they don't look at traffic when they go for a fare, and fares don't look before opening doors right into your lane.

I'm not sure what your uncle's "back in the day" was, but I've never seen or heard anyone actually do this in 35 years of riding in Southern Ontario. I've heard lots of bar talk about it, but nothing about an actual occurrence. I do know of one or two folks that busted a mirror off with their fist but that doesn't tend to go well, as the driver of the vehicle tries to drive you off the road with their two tonne advantage. :)

He's actually 70 now and grew up in etob. I dunno about you but I'm not quite crazy enough to cut off or chase down a coloured biker, in a car or an armored tank for that matter. Or report it. So what if you've never heard of it. People have had much worse result over road rage. I'd be willing to bet more than a few drivers have lost a mirror lol. To argue that is pretty naive.

Wondering if a "will wheelie for boobs" t-shirt will work?

I find most drivers give room and are quite nice, but some want to race you because you are on a bike.

Some people expect you to go fast and and give you room to merge and go ahead, even though I don't intend to.

Some people get really mad when I lane filter and merge ahead of them. Most don't.

Maybe the fact that they can see your size, shape and in many cases gender plays a role in how they react. This is just hypothetical but perhaps we may all be experiencing slightly different results due to that. Maybe a really big guy on a bike would get a little more respect than a skinny/smaller dude. I have heard of women riders getting harnessed by guys in cars and on bikes. Would like to see a poll to see if its true :/. Sometimes I find that some bike setups can be intimidating without taking into account the rider but I don't see that very often. Every time I see a rider getting harassed its usually by aggressive individuals in cars taking advantage of the more passive and mature character of the rider. While the riders that I see riding more aggressively without the mature and passive kind of attitude tend to be left alone.

Those are the impressions I get. I could be minding my own business not riding too aggressively doing the limit or even slightly over and often cars gun it and go around, or bate while side by side.

I'm not exactly small just under 6' and 193. I think the bike might bring it out in some people pos and neg. Perhaps it is a subconscious thing as someone also mentioned and it instinctively gives some the led foot, makes them feel speedy. While others are just generally ******** in every day life.

I had a small issue and had to pull over to the side, some drivers laid on the horn and saluted like it was my fault I'm having a technical problem. But those ones surely do it regardless of what your riding/ driving.

Been cut off 3 times my first week back out. Not making errors, they just didn't look properly. One was pretty hairy I had very little place to go, that got the adrenaline pumping. One lady was on her phone. The new law hasn't seemed to detour anyone from gabbing on their phone. I see multiple examples daily.

I have also encountered many considerate drivers as well, willing to let me merge ect.

They tend to show an amount of respect towards me. I've had an old man (looked like he was 60) driving an Aston Martin check out my bike and we talked a bit while waiting at a red light. Another experience would be while in rush hour traffic, a nissan altima with 3 guys in it were checking out and complimenting my bike as they drove past. And even while filling up gas at a gas station there was this guy (looked around late 30's to early 40's) driving a Porsche checked out and complimented my bike. I tend to get the spacing I need while on the road, so far no real bad experience.

I wonder if cars would be stupid enough to cut somebody off on a Harley with a Hell's Angel or Outlaws cut lol

You're kidding right? What possible difference would that make?

I took a burger run up to Alliston today and generally speaking drivers were OK. Then 100 yards from home I see Mr. Texter not appearing to slow down for his red light. I have a green but that only means the bulb isn't burnt out.

He stopped a quarter of the way through the intersection as I braked. I don't think it would have been much different if I was in a cage.

New fine suggestion for texting while driving. $155 for the first offence. $155 plus one finger removed for the second offence.

Most of the time my negative encounters are with people that simply aren't paying any attention. Some are jerks about it after, some wave sorry.

The ones that get scary are the guys that get their panties in a bunch apparently because I'm female (those guys can be really SERIOUSLY hostile). Thankfully, that bunch is few and far between.

when on the bike its amazing how much more crap you see cagers doing in there cars. From texting, reading the paper, eating with both hands to smoking weed. I see at least one person a week smoking a joint behind the wheel. Driving is a privilege not a right and cops need to enforce stupid driving more.

it kills me how often i'm riding around the city and i catch a wiff of the green long before i see it.

i started a similar thread a few months back. pick ups, sports sedans (predominatley bmws) and beat up ricers with fart cans are the worst culprits. i usually get and receive nice ride nods from the nice rides.

The scariest one was on the dvp though. i was probably doing 30 over trying to pass an m3 that was having a hard time staying in his lane, guy was eating a burger. the next turn the guy come flying past me in my lane, missed me be half a foot. if i had a gun i would have shot him.

corevettes ferraris astons jags etc. i get nothing but respect.

if i see a wanna be turner car i'll fly past them in redline in 6th gear so by the time they get the urge to do something stupid theres a football feild between us.
