Holy Smokes!!! This country is off it's collective head.

Man, I love National Post articles

First line, bias much?:
"Even in a country with gun laws as warped as Canada’s"

If this is even half true, it's disgusting. I would expect this kind of ridiculous reaction in the UK or Australia, not here.

Don't you worry. Sounds like this guy just won a big lottery. Just wait for the law suits against the school board, police, etc etc.

As I understand it you can't sue the cops unless you can prove malice. At the worst, the cops should have patted him down in private and once confirming he was of no immediate danger, done a due dilligence check without the theatrics. I'm surprised he got an appology.

If this was the States he can sue and win big money but Canada I don't know. And lawyers cost a lot of money, he'd have to find a lawyer willing to take his case on for free and be compensated by the winnings if any. Tough to find a lawyer like that in Canada I would think.

Waterloo is messed up you get fined for throwing up and now for doodling a gun. Don't remember it being like that when I went to their University in the 90's but lots changed now.

So....

She also, according to police, explained to the teacher that the gun was at her house, that her siblings played with it and that it scared her.

I can see why she would want to ask a few more questions.

Not sure if police and CPA were required to determine it was an airsoft toy.

And there was a gun … a clear plastic toy gun that shoots soft plastic biodegradable BBs and retails for around $20 at Walmart.

I guess it comes down to the approach taken with the family.

I can honestly see why the teacher would be concerned if the child was saying there was a "gun at home, and the kids play with it, and I am afraid of it". But to be honest, I think I would have come to the conclusion that it was likely a toy and taken that route to try and get at the truth.

And if the girl drew a chicken in her fathers hand, would he be arrested for showing his cock? Ridiculous.

when it comes to children, i think we should always err on the side of caution.

i personally would not take the chance that it was probably a 'toy' and leave it un-investigated.

sorry, but when a 4 year old draws guns in their free-time doodling, alarm bells go off. this is not a regular occurrence, and should merit more inquiry.

furthermore, context is all. i realize that he's led an improved life, but he does have a rap sheet, and they were not victimless crimes, and they weren't ancient history. as far as i can see, everyone did their jobs, and while the strip search was perhaps a bit overboard, the call was for weapons.

i wonder if all of the civil liberties thumpers here would have been equally offended if this was a g20 protester in toronto, circa 2010, when the potential victims then weren't even children, and even less evidence was used to search and detain (for a much longer time, as well) innocent people. . .

I see a wonderful future for you, working for the gov't of this country.
,sigh.

Spoken like someone who hasn't spent any kind of time with 4 yr old children. Wanna come over and watch my 6 & 4 yr old for some "real experience"?

actually, my government wouldn't have violated the civil liberties of the g20 protesters, who were legally exercising their charter rights. . .

goes to show how little people care to know about someone before making ill-informed and incorrect assumptions. . .my kids (one at university and the other going into high school soon) are a lot older than your kids, and over the years i have watched more than my fair share of 6 and 4 year olds as a result. . . still sticking to my original points.

i'm going to want maximum due diligence by everyone involved when kids are at stake. don't want to have the cops walk up my steps to tell me that they thought it wasn't a big deal when a kid at my daughter's school started drawing guns, that they just assumed it was a toy, and sorry for your loss, it was an accident, yadda yadda yadda. just because we're not parents stupid enough to allow access to firearms to our kids doesn't mean that there aren't adults out there who lack common sense. face it, we've all seen people before that made us cringe and question whether they should be parents. . .

like i wrote before, context, people. . .context. if this guy was a leo (that might explain the gun in daddy's hand, or knowledge of such) or a sainted knight, sure, but fairly recent convictions for serious crimes (assault and attempted burglary)? people were following established protocol, as far as i can tell.

Wow dude... First of all, get off the damn hippy G20 bandwagon! If you're in a public place where cop cars are being lit on fire, stores smashed in (in effect, a riot, no?) and you appear to be supporting it, and the cops say to leave, you LEAVE if you really are a peaceful protestor. You think you would know that it's not the image you want to be associated with, and you would leave so the cops could do their job of protecting people without your tofu eating ***** in the way.

Second of all. I grew up in a house with guns. I was exposed at a very early age. In fact, I have a picture of me at about 3 years old holding my dad's REAL shot gun with a few dead geese on the floor in front of me. Guess what? I grew up doodling guns, cars, bikes, whatever it was that a kid can be interested in.
Most of my friends were the same, we all grew up with guns in the house. And wow, not one of us died from a fire arm! I actually felt safer knowing that down stairs we had a case full of rifles and shot guns and that it was likely we were able to defend ourselves. In some house holds, guns are a common thing. I would think that any responsible parent that is also a gun owner would show and explain the gun to their kids, simply for safety reasons.

The guy has a case. I too have a "record". It's in the past, I paid my dues and I've been strait ever since. I managed to get my PAL after, have a military career etc. If I was arrested simply because I have guns and there are kids in the house and I f*$%#d up at some point in my past, I would be ******. Especially the humiliation of being arrested IN PUBLIC, put in to a cruiser in cuffs IN PUBLIC, taken away, being strip searched (I bet you have no idea how humiliating that is), and my kids being taken away with no explanation and then held for hours without being told why.
When I was arrested I was told out right why... I wasn't strip searched and was treated somewhat respectfully and I was actually guilty of something. This guy had done nothing wrong.

This is why I hate city people. Ignorant, selfish, self righteous jack offs.

Where is that gun registry????

FYI, the gun registry is still in place. It hasn't been abolished YET.
But damn, this makes a good example as to how useless it really is, isn't it?! Guy was totally innocent, and a quick check of the registry would have proven it, but apparently it failed.

Great waste of $2 BILLION when all of us "stupid gun owning rednecks" were crying out how ineffective it really would be.

Were you down here or 300km away watching it on TV?
