Hot topic in Peterborough right now, and I think it's ridiculous. Peterborough has a staggering 11% unemployment rate, the worst in all of Ontario. Now they are looking at giving companies tax breaks on hiring immigrants instead of the people that were born and raised here and put in there dues. Not only are a lot of companies contracting there work overseas, now you have them just kicking out existing employee's and bringing in new " Canadians " just to save some money.

In Canada, if you are not an aboriginal, you are technically a immigrant.

You are just trying to start a fight. When you posted the same thing in other threads people just ignored you... so now you need your own thread?

Can't wait for Holmes to discover this thread and chime in....

100% wrong, are you born here? Yes? Then you're no longuer an immigrant.
Amerindian immigrated from asia, following your thought, they are also immigrant....

Will you still hate on them - for taking a job spend all their savings starting from scratch (i.e. buying a house, furniture etc...) which is technically spending more on economy than a person who has been here for 25yrs+ and is settled - when they become permanent citizens?

Do they suddenly qualify when they become citizens?

I was an immigrant 10 yrs ago... full citizen now. What's difference between me, you and a landed immigrant other than possibly having different skin colour?

Right now I save most of my income rather than spending it cuz I don't need most ****... I don't stimulate the economy as much as a newly landed immigrant. I'm not for landed immigrants getting tax breaks (cuz I'm not getting it), but I am not against it because immigrants face much more hardship when trying to get a job and qualify so much that some of them end up welfare because we refuse to recognize the fact that they were a doctor back can be useful here. Instead of fast tracking them we have them driving around in taxis. It's a broken system that disables them from becoming what they should be.

I'm posting a news article, how is that starting a fight ?. Terrorism and Immigration are probably the biggest concerns North America has at the moment, and to the general populace, they go hand in hand.

Getting down to the nitty gritty of the article, imagine you are a small business owner in Peterborough needing to hire a body for an entry level position. Would you hire the Johnny Canuck or hire the immigrant and get a nice fat 10k chq?

That's not right, you come to this Country you shouldn't get special privileges over folks who already live here.

Well I am an imagrant been here since 1991, went through the process and I am now a carded Canadian and proud of it. this is an awesome country we just need to get rid of people that are nothing but sponges and leaching off the hard workers. I have been busting my but off to support Onatrio, so stuff like this should get every one fired up not just locals to Peterborough. What pisses me off about this whole thing is that people will still vote for that idiot Dalton Mcguinty.

Instead of doing stupid sh** like this find the sponges of Ontario that are doing nothing but leaching off society and get rid of them. The honest hard working imagrants that are here legally( I CAN NOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH LEGALLY ) are not the problem.

Just my 2 cents.

You have to be on some crazy drugs to think that you can convince people you don't want to start a fight by using the word Canadian in quotation marks when talking about immigrants.

Foreign electricians cant cut it for the most parts so im not for fast tracking doctors.

My grandfather came here with nothing, managed to bring over his wife and 5 kids a year later and died in a paid off $600,000 house. He did it without any help.
Most immigrants are harder working, and happier with less so I see that as an advantage for them in the work force to begin with. Not for any special treatment, should be best man for the job.

I am not for the tax credits, but I am for is fixing the broken system that disables them. We need doctors not taxi drivers. When we choose to okay an immigrant that is a skilled professional there should be something done by the government to help them get into their experienced profession. For example, only let those professionals migrate that there is a job demand for that won't be fulfilled immediate by the general public and help them by providing educational support or some financial support. Hampering and putting road blocks on their path doesn't help anyone.

I believe that in an interview the most skilled person should get hired, but that's not the case in day and age. Preference is almost always given. When I applied for my internship last year I was chosen partly because I had a disability etc... My name was put forward by HR... they knew about the disability, but the not hiring manager. During the interview I told the hiring manager "look I have a permanent invisible disability.... these are my strengths and these are my weaknesses. This is what I've done with my strengths and this is how I can effectively do my job and won't need any accommodation." There were two people hired me and a rich girl who was recommended by some VP.

Immigrants are hard workers because they have families to raise and I completely agree that a lot of them do make it on their own with hard work. We did it, but that not to say that there aren't hurdles in the system that prevent them from succeeding.

Let's face it we're a country that is full of immigrants. I'm against those that come here and don't do **** to adapt to our culture. I don't believe in assimilation, but believe that they should learn english or french at the minimum. There is an immigrant problem that exists here when they come in and we should address that.

I've noticed that every second immigrant was a Doctor in his homeland.....

There is a need for doctors in this country which might be the reason they bring them over, but then stop them from getting anywhere. If you're going to do that then just bring people qualified only able to do manual labour if that's what you want.
