Higher alcohol prices urged to cut abuse

Actually I do see the increased costs.

You would have to go to a border town to see the weekend abuse. Bar signs advertising $2.00 well drinks and shooters all targeted at the 19 yo Americans. The hospital emergency wards are chock full of them after 2am all busted up or comatose, while the downtown streets and parking garages are spotted with urine stains and puddles of vomit. Policing is much higher on the weekend, and many establishments hire off-duty officers, passing the costs along to the customers. Do I think it will make a difference? Not sure, but I know what alcohol does to society and it is very costly.

I live 20 mins from the closest quebec liquor store. Alcoholism is as common here as it is back home in southern Ontario, despite the fact alcohol is a fair bit cheaper here and with a lower age limit right next door.

An addict will feed it no matter the costs.

I see a correlation with this thread and the one suggesting we raise welfare.

i guess if we gonna raise booze prices we gotta give the people more money to buy it eh? hahaah

Texas was in the process of using debit cards for people on public assistance, so that they can limit what can be bought with that money. The proposal is to block purchase of alcohol, tobacco, and lottery tickets.

I could honestly see this going either way. I sometimes do liquor demonstrations for some of the higher-end liquors at LCBOs across gta and you'd be surprised - the guys who shell out the money for all the good scotches, ryes, etc. are never dudes who look like they're loaded.

As judgmental as it sounds, the grungiest people will be the ones walking out with good Brandy or that Green Label while the guy in the nice suit is the one buying middle-tier or even entry level liquor.

Only wannabes wear a suit all the time. Like those looses that go clubbing in a suit. Most are just part timers at some store and blow their cheque in one weekend to be a "baller"

What an amazing freakin' idea! However, they would still manage to get their fix... just not on our dime.

They will just sell the debit cards "at a loss $100 card for say $60" to some organized crime that will set up shop. This way not only do they get their fix but the government will lose even more money. The aborigines in Aus figured this one out a long time ago when the government stopped putting cash directly into their bank accounts.

I figured as much, when I heard about the idea; either what you said or unscrupulous sellers who would mislabel products, to skirt the issue. It would require something additional like fingerprinting, which would get the personal liberty types all up in arms over it.

I already know of a pile of welfare people that somehow get grocery cards for free (I'm not sure where they get them, I think some charity?). They then use them as currency to buy drugs. Or if they need cash they'll sell a $20 or $15 grocery card for $10 and then go buy a bag of native cigarettes or something.

lol i dont doubt it.
they called these cards "dignity cards" since people would feel ashamed when cashing their welfare cheques or food stamps. shouldn't you feel ashamed if you're a leech?
