Higher alcohol prices urged to cut abuse

Raising prices wouldn't accomplish anything except making alcoholics broke so their kids can starve even more. They will put booze over food. Then it will just make it more expensive for non-alcoholics to get drinks.

Reminds me of that doctor that keeps saying we should lower speed limits to reduce pedestrian deaths instead of teaching people not to run in front of cars.

You don't have to tell THIS son of an alcoholic father that

(See my post right above yours ;))

Does anybody know the tax rate on booze to begin with in ontario? Because travelling across the border ive noticed its insane, for example bottle of johnnie walker blue label at lcbo is $299, at the duty free $155. Bottle of canadian club at lcbo is $49, at duty free $36.

So we're taxed up to almost 50% on booze, and they want to raise it? When will this **** stop?
We're close to 50% on fuel, 30% on income tax, another 13% of that taxed income when you spend. Are you guys all that rich that you dont mind?

The hilarious part its always "for our own good" wtf

Thanks to those keep voting spendrif politicians.
They keep using pretexts to increase taxation on everything. I guess we're too blind to notice

Speaking from a mountain of personal experience, I'll echo what many here are saying - increasing the price of alcohol will *not* stop the alcoholic from putting alcohol in their body. Practical matters such as affordability/availability mean nothing to the mind of an addict. It's sad, but it's true.

Anyone wanna start a GTAM Brew-your-own-booze Store? :D

Depends on your reputation. Some alcohol can cause blindness

Potato Vodka for everyone!
Bathtub Gin?
Plum Brandy?

So many options :D

Those who are alcoholics will continue to drink no matter the price, so I fail to see the logic except for the fact it will net the LCBO more money.

Bingo !!! We have a winner !

I could honestly see this going either way. I sometimes do liquor demonstrations for some of the higher-end liquors at LCBOs across gta and you'd be surprised - the guys who shell out the money for all the good scotches, ryes, etc. are never dudes who look like they're loaded.

As judgmental as it sounds, the grungiest people will be the ones walking out with good Brandy or that Green Label while the guy in the nice suit is the one buying middle-tier or even entry level liquor.

Never mistake appearance for truth. you would be surprised how many motorcycle salesmen have missed out on a high end bike sale by making the same error.

Lol, it's so true. Loss prevention always follows me around LCBO whenever I go and get scotch. They're fun to mess with.

To your point Rob, that's why I'm not currently driving an STi. The jerkoffs at the Subaru dealership wouldn't even let me take a test drive without "proof I had the money". I made sure Mitsu faxed them over the confirmation when I bought my Evo.

+1.

Just because they wear a suit M-F, 9 to 5, doesn't mean they don't like to walk around in sweat pants/jeans on a Saturday to buy their booze.

I'm sure he's talking about appearance such as combed hair, no froth around the mouth, no bruises around the face, etc

Believe me, I know. These are usually the first people that I offer a sample to. It's probably one of the less interesting things that I've noticed, too. And my boss wonders how I'm selling so much more than everyone else :D

Macs, no creeper or anything, but I've always wondered what your background was. You can sort of get a good sense from people about their posts. If I had to guess, I'd say that you're ethnic but very well-assimilated. Did I guess that right, at least? This reminds me of that thread where we had to guess what people looked like irl & no one would've guessed that sempire was a huge black dude

Lol I could dedicate a few pages to my background...my family I grew up with (mom's side) is VERY ethnic, they're Indo-Guyanese. My dad's side is Irish and Catholic but frankly I never liked the man (love my uncles though). I don't really consider myself to be anything other than Canadian. My moral compass and values don't really jive with either of them.
