Hey all...bend over....

As I just receive my annual 2% raise...FML. Maybe time to make a jump again.

I guess it's a blessing that pool heater finally gave up yesterday? I can spend $5k+ to get a heat pump and do an end run around carbon tax. A few years ago pool heater was $1-2/hr to run. I ran the numbers this year and it was just under $5. With the jump, it would obviously be more than that.

It’s not something simple like a capacitor? Or an ignitor? Or a control board? Heck I even replaced the entire heat exchanger on mine a couple of yrs ago as it had rotted out and was leaking.

Way cheaper than $5K.

Most of the above? Made in 2010, not exactly sure of install date (came with the house, installer did what every installer does and installed it directly before salt cell with no check valve so super chlorinated water backs up into heat exchanger when pump is off). Highly suspect small leak in heat exchanger. Burner rusted out, can't get it to burn blue anymore. Rolled out and took out thermal fuse yesterday. I can replace thermal fuse for ~$20 and it will work poorly for a short period of time. Burner and hex are way more money than it deserves (cabinet under burner is also dust).

I could install a replacement gas heater for less (3-4) but as we've seen, gas is climbing fast and I don't think it will come down to historic levels. Add in Douggie's possible super-cheap overnight electric rate and operating costs quickly diverge.

EDIT:
Just for completeness, burner is ~$2000 special order, three to five weeks to deliver. Hex is approximately the same. Proper repair is not happening.

Time to switch my home heating to be powered by roadkill and flyers that I find in my mailbox.
I'm already thinking of using my fireplace this winter. With all the down trees from that storm there is a lifetime supply of material everywhere.

Unfortunately those who didn't are in the same boat with those who did. Enjoy the ride.
Can you explain that. Anyone who already insulated their house is in a cheaper heating cost "boat" than those that havn't.
