Health Care Horror Stories

Latest fiasco.Wife was scheduled to see a specialist tomorrow afternoon and start some new treatment. Her office called to reschedule the appointment because the doctor has to take her cat the the vet. WTF!

Maybe shes one of those weird cat ladies

I bet the vet won't want to see her anyway, they might see the cat though, meet in the parking lot and then they will send the owner on their way.

Can’t believe they would actually tell you that.

They could have told you “she has an emergency” and left it at that.

Thought the same thing, unless she is taking the cat to the vet because of a suspect virus and needs it tested :/ that might be relevant and important.

The person answering the phone at the specialists office is usually a minimum wage office clerk . They probably thought a trip to the vet would trigger some empathy.
My wife would totally understand blowing off work to take a cat to the vet. I'd say new cats are $10.00 ea at the farmers market.

I'm due for a blood test in a crowded clinic but it has a big parking lot. WHY CAN'T I GET A PARKING LOT JAB?

Seriously, set up a tent like the car windshield repair guys. Drive in, window down, sleeve up, wipe, jab, band-aid and bye-bye.

Wingboy, I'm not sure if the person involved considers their cat more important than your wife, needs the cat as an emotional support animal or has uncaring communication skills but they make me nervous. Hopefully they just had a brain fart.

Okay but...

To a lot of people their pets are family. There could be a plethora of factors. If she said she was bringing her child to the doctor would you be as upset?

Don't get me wrong I empathize with his own situation, but doctors are typically fairly moral people with levels of judgement id put above the average person.

Doctors have just as much going on in their private life as anyone else.

I've generally had good experiences with the medical system except for the long wait times. All my interactions have been the result of injury (broken bones or sports injuries for me and my son) or dealing with palliative care when my late parents were undergoing cancer treatment - they were very accommodating. Too bad they couldn't cure the cancer :(

I'm pushing 60. I have chronic pain in my knees from hard skiing, and metal screws/plate in my shoulder from a bad motorcycle accident. I like to think of my medical issues as evidence of a life well lived!

True, if this is the first visit the doctor doesn't know the patient and the particular sensitivities.

I understand pets being part of the family but I get a bit testy when people put the lives of animals above the lives of humans. The doctor at least has a communications problem. Either keep it curt, a family emergency or give the whole story ie it's a support animal for a traumatized child. Curt is better. Keep it private.

There could be a long valid explanation but it sounds like a cat was more important than a person. Bedside manner isn't a forte with every doctor and some people need the right bedside manner.

Many vet clinics are open until 8pm.

Maybe take Fluffy after doctors office hours.

So do I. But if it came to saving my cat or just about any person on the planet it's no contest. There are a select few where the cat would be first...

I say tit for tat if by chance you miss an appointment with the doc and they want to bill you or complain just say ahhh my cat I'm sure that they will understand.
FWIW my experance with our fine public health care is that you damn well need to be your own advocate and pay good attention to whats going on or the results likely will be less than optional.
