Harley Cop Rant

They kinda have to balance their requirements. Sure, they're riding the bike for one minute, but the next they might have to hop off and start chasing someone. A full face helmet, leather suit, and race gauntlets aren't exactly optimized for foot pursuits or particularly compatible with police equipment.

And then there's another reason... MONEY. I'm sure most forces would love to get some shiny new BMWs, but the way police budgets keep getting the axe, it's not exactly top priority.

LOL, with an annual budget topping $900 million/yr for TPS.

I was heading up the QEW the other day and noticed a cop on a Harley at around Hamilton. Of course people see this and slow down from 120 to 105km/h.

I was tailing him at around 105 in the left lane when this left lane hogger was
1. oblivious there were two motorcycles behind her
2. oblivious the next lane was open
3. oblivious that one of us was a cop

After a good 10 minutes I had enough and decided to switch 4 lanes to the far right lane and pass at 120 just before the Burlington Bridge Toronto Bound. The cop was tailgating the car the whole time I was behind him and it looked like he was clearly trying to get her attention and pass.

I don't understand why he didn't throw the lights on either to move her *** over or pull her over. Is there such thing as a ticket for being unaware of your surroundings cause f!!!, I was starting to road rage and had urges to cut the b#@$ off right in front of the cop.

I've seen this guy several times in the area. He's mostly watches for people on their cell phones. He was probably tailgating her to see if she was yapping on the phone, or just waiting for her to pick up her device.

Last month, I followed him from Highway 6, all the way to Centennial Parkway, and all he did was he kept pulling up to the right side of every car he could to see if people were on their phone, and if they had their seatbelts on . It was quite sneaky as he clearly caught people by surprise as he would pull up inches from their right side and they would hammer their brakes startled.

Only on the 400. People get out of the way on the passing lane. I always thank them with my hazards. (when i'm driving my car)

Its supposed to be applicable to ALL roads. Go to Quebec City. Drive down a 60km limit dual lane road.. Notice everyone is on the curbside lane. Only passing vehicles are on the left lane. Oh, and it's funny how the ontario drivers stick out after a while. The morons I'm talking about here also drive trucks and motorcycles. Its not just a carer thing

The problem is Ontarions get confused once there's more than 2 lanes (in each direction). If you're on the 402, not a problem, even the 401 where it's down to 2 lanes they stay to the right...mostly. But once the third lane opens up, stupid prevails.

motorcycle cops dismounting and engaging in FOOT CHASES?

Dismount and foot chase starts at 4:20

Personally I like to ride at about 110 on the highway. About as fast as I can go without risking a ticket. And yes I get annoyed at people who hog the left lane and drive at 100 but..... 100 is the legal limit so for those of us that drive any faster we are the ones breaking the law, not her.

Incorrect.

Unnecessary slow driving prohibited
132. (1) No motor vehicle shall be driven on a highway at such a slow rate of speed as to impede or block the normal and reasonable movement of traffic thereon except when the slow rate of speed is necessary for safe operation having regard to all the circumstances.

Normal isn't 100 here.

On my commute if I'm not going 140km/hr in the fast lane I am getting tailgated.

100 is normal in the proper lane, ie. the rightmost.

I take the 407 most days and haven't gone into the left lane - that's hook it up and tow it away territory.

That would make sense, prior to the whole tailgating scene he was checking out a lot of cars as he rode by. But he was tailing her for what seemed liked forever, surprised he had that much patience...

That guy trolls that stretch pretty regular now that there are new offramps/onramps around Waterdown Rd. Usually he is parked next to a guardrail shooting radar sitting side saddle, and when he gets bored he'll troll back & forth looking for cellphones/seatbelts.

Money? in Toronto? Police force in Toronto has the highest budget in North America. Robba the Ford gives them all the gravy (+11% last year alone). They did buy some BMWs in the 90s. Harleys cost more than the Kawasaki police specials they use in the US. The brakes on the Police Harleys are a joke, and they have no cornering clearance.
This is about some corupt deal between the police and a Harley supplier.

I have never seen this enforced. I have never seen following too close or lanes changes without signalling enforced.

Highways are dangerous because unsafe drivers can weave all over the road, and the OPP only care about speeding, not because of safety, but because it's a fast way to generate revenue with a guaranteed conviction. Once a year they stop cars and trucks for safety checks.

The OPP should allow video deputies with Go Pros -they record the infraction, email the video and the OPP can charge.

Dream on. It's frustrating how futile it is, hoping that even a 1/2 assed lane discipline might happen here someday. But it won't. The mini vans camped in the fast lane with 4 tv screens for their snot dispensers cartoons are not going away. Or the ex-goat/duck herder suddenly finds themselves in a camry on the 401, well there's an endless supply of those too.

I remember many years ago there was a story in The Star. This guy got a ticket for doing 115-120km/h on the 401. To make a statement, him and his buddy drove on a two lane section of the 401 at 100km/h, obviously causing a traffic jam. They were pulled over and ticketed with someone much worse than speeding, don't remember what though.

This is quite true. This is my experience everytime I head out along the 401 to my aunt's cottage in Napanee and on the return trip.

I remember that story. Ticketed - sure, but convicted? I don't recall, and they're two different things.
