GPS vs Phone

Pros: No batteries
Cons: 'Have to stop, get off the bike to use.
Useless on a cloudy night.

Would you believe me if I said we just got one of those this weekend?
My engineer missus just got one of those from her engineer dad. I have no idea how to use it. It came off a tugboat apparently. They like tugboats in that family. I don't know. Engineers are weird man.

I've had to use my phone as a GPS couple times over the years and once it did that too. I had it plugged into the bike and wasn't sure if being charged while exposed to the hot sun caused the issue. It was an older iPhone 6, so I'm also not sure if that issue would happen with the newer phones.

Yeah when I rode across Italy I would just alternate between plugged in and unplugged.

Most of the phone's internals are solid state, so no moving parts to damage.

What has changed in the last few years are the stabilization motors utilized by some of the higher-end cameras, and those can get wrecked by the vibrations from the motorcycle unless it is adequately dampened.

Here's a warning from Apple about the iPhone's camera being susceptible to this:

All good, Harley riders are safe...

one day im just gonna try one of the cheap aliexpress carplay options like this that just pairs with your phone. you get the benefit of google maps data without risking your phone.

that being said, i've mounted my phones for years (used ram x mount and now quadlock with vibe dampener) as my main gps and haven't had an issue.

Sextant. Partner/sailor knows how to use one of those. You not only need to carry that but the tables as well.
Hard to believe that early 747s had a window for the navigator to "shoot the stars" when doing long distance flights. How times change.

Replaced my Zumo with scenic on iPhone 5 years ago and recently added a Carpiride wireless CarPlay/ Android screen.

Worked very well on my 3 week tour in Colorado/ west tour last June

Purchased the one equipped with the BMW bracket to fit the Nav prep. No additional wiring needed.

My phone now sits in my pocket or top case on longer rides and out of the harsh elements my old iPhone 8 endured for years.
I’ve seen a few of the KTM ADV guys with the Carpuride units and they seem to like them. I see you can find them at good prices on Amazon.
I had a BMW Navigator VI on my last bike (BMW) and now have a XT on my KTM. Other than not being able to control it with the wheel I like everything about the XT better (I don’t go where there’s traffic so I can’t comment on that).
I also don’t mind having the dual screens as in my application the XT is higher and closer to me and more in my field of vision of the road whereas if I had directions on my bikes screen I’d have to look further away from the road ahead to read it.

I've heard very good things about the Carpe Iter handlebar controllers, and will likely pick one up this summer to combine with an Android Auto screen to pair with my phone tucked away safely somewhere.

I've used an SP Connect mount for a few years with an old LG Android handset to protect my main handset from vibrations and exposure. But as @Lightcycle notes above, even with supposedly touchscreen compatible gloves, manipulating it is frustrating at best, downright dangerous at worst.

The Carpe Iter controller comes recommended by the gear nerd over at the Bennett's Bike Social YouTube channel here:

They also make a mountable tablet designed for off-road use, but it ain't cheap and is probably overkill for my needs. I'm hoping to pair it with a cheapo screen mirror from Chigee or Aoocci (love the Chinese alphabet soup names) for a more budget option...

The phones shut down in a strong sun.
They are generally cooled enough by wind from riding.
I keep mine in my pocket most often - only once in a while on the handlebar mount.

This is true - if you are stuck in slow moving traffic for a period of time with the sun beating on the phone, or you just park and forget to take it off your handlebars it can happen, especially if the phone is charging at the time as that creates extra heat as well. Typically the screen just starts to get darker and darker as the phone turns down the back light to try to reduce heat, and then eventually (at least on iPhones) it will go into an overheat mode where it just shows a full screen warning telling you to cool the phone down before continuing to use it.

That said, I have ridden a lot of kilometres with mine on the handlebars and never had any problems at all so long as I was moving. I’ve had the screen start to dim a few times while stopped in traffic, but only once has it ever gone into the overheat mode. I’ve actually had that happen more times while camping and leaving my phone on the picnic table only for the sun to come around and beat on it.

I used a standard Garmin GPS on my Goldwing and didn't have any problems. It was sheltered and if it was wet out, I put a plastic bag over it.

I added an output jack to the unit so it fed into the intercom circuit, overriding the radio or media. It didn't work well with gloves.

I wouldn't use Garmin again due to the crap performance of my latest one in the car.
