That's really only one step down from my paper maps, however I can read maps at night.

Would you believe me if I said we just got one of those this weekend?
My engineer missus just got one of those from her engineer dad. I have no idea how to use it. It came off a tugboat apparently. They like tugboats in that family. I don't know. Engineers are weird man.
Yeah when I rode across Italy I would just alternate between plugged in and unplugged.

Most of the phone's internals are solid state, so no moving parts to damage.
What has changed in the last few years are the stabilization motors utilized by some of the higher-end cameras, and those can get wrecked by the vibrations from the motorcycle unless it is adequately dampened.
Here's a warning from Apple about the iPhone's camera being susceptible to this:

one day im just gonna try one of the cheap aliexpress carplay options like this that just pairs with your phone. you get the benefit of google maps data without risking your phone.
that being said, i've mounted my phones for years (used ram x mount and now quadlock with vibe dampener) as my main gps and haven't had an issue.

Sextant. Partner/sailor knows how to use one of those. You not only need to carry that but the tables as well.

I’ve seen a few of the KTM ADV guys with the Carpuride units and they seem to like them. I see you can find them at good prices on Amazon.Replaced my Zumo with scenic on iPhone 5 years ago and recently added a Carpiride wireless CarPlay/ Android screen.

Purchased the one equipped with the BMW bracket to fit the Nav prep. No additional wiring needed.

I had a BMW Navigator VI on my last bike (BMW) and now have a XT on my KTM. Other than not being able to control it with the wheel I like everything about the XT better (I don’t go where there’s traffic so I can’t comment on that).
I also don’t mind having the dual screens as in my application the XT is higher and closer to me and more in my field of vision of the road whereas if I had directions on my bikes screen I’d have to look further away from the road ahead to read it.

I've heard very good things about the Carpi Moto handlebar controllers, and will likely pick one up this summer to combine with an Android Auto screen to pair with my phone tucked away safely somewhere.
I've used an SP Connect mount for a few years with an old LG Android handset to protect my main handset from vibrations and exposure. But as @Lightcycle notes above, even with supposedly touchscreen compatible gloves, manipulating it is frustrating at best, downright dangerous at worst.
The Carpi Moto controller comes recommended by the gear nerd over at the Bennett's Bike Social YouTube channel here:
They also make a mountable tablet designed for off-road use, but it ain't cheap and is probably overkill for my needs. I'm hoping to pair it with a cheapo screen mirror from Chigee or Aoocci (love the Chinese alphabet soup names) for a more budget option...
