Gone off cable TV

The only problem with this is paying more to get an internet package without a data cap.

$75/mth from teksaavy gets you no cap, and 30Mbps/5Mbps connection.
$54/mth for the same thing with a 300GB cap.

300GB seems to be more than enough, even if you're an HD snob and watch nothing under 720P.

Still cheaper than the $150+/mth cable bills some of my friends used to have.

It's kinda weird to have the Rogers van pull in to fix the Teksavvy cable now.

We ended up zapping the cap or something like that.

Our speed gets cut to ~12 mbit/s from 30 between 8 pm and midnight, but with unlimited for the same price.

Which is still faster than majority of other highspeed internet users in Canada. win-win.

10Mbps is about as low as you want to go for uninterrupted HD streaming.

Told FutureTV bye bye and downloaded to software for free.
Saved another $120

or for 30 bucks you can get the Chromecast and stream directly from your laptop using Kodi to your tv and not have to worry about plugging in

So 3 months now with the box and couldn't be happier. have already saved the cost of the box.

They also created an add on for live tv that gives aprox 300 channels of international and US live channels including BeIn (which i really enjoy)

PPV sport events can be watched and all sport events in HD

I also setup all the shows i regularly watch as part of my library and once i open Kodi, I go to TVShows and all the latest episodes are there for me to watch and I don't have to search for anything. Kind of like a PVR

I am currently watching The Wire and many other shows since I don't waste my time scrolling through 100 channels of crap with Rogers - I couldn't go back.

what requirement does the t.v need to accept signal from the computer? sorry, not to tech savvy nowadays. i understand the wired application, but not familiar with wireless. thanks

So Teksavvy is the way to go then? I'm presently with Bell as they stole me away from Rogers with free internet for 12 months. But when that's up, I don't want to pay $50 for 65 gb.

You can try Acanac too. I'm with teksavvy, but I hear Acanac is cheaper

Basically your tv needs to have an HDMI port. The chromecast is plugged to your tv HDMI and though an app on your laptop transmits the wifi signal from your laptop to the tv.

Very simple - youtube chromecast and there are many videos that show you how it works

Just looked it up. Acanac offers free phone with internet package.

yes, thanks.

+1 for Kodi/XBMC.

I use a pc, output vga to my tv, wireless mouse/kyb, done. Pretty much any show is there.

With tech savvy as well, 300gig per month package, so far so good.

Recently cut the cable, I was paying $45 for Rogers basic cable. Nobody in the home really watched TV except for CP24, CBC and sports.

Anyone have recommendations on OTA equipment? We looked into VMedia for IPTV but they want us to use their internet service, and I'm not interested in that.

We're also porting our home phone number to freephoneline.ca (~14-days); was also paying $50 for basic home phone with Rogers.

Recently upgraded the internet from 175/10 to 250/20. Their speedboost skews the the speedtest.net results

All in all a bit of whirlwind past few days, a lot of our Rogers discounts ended on Jan 5, 2015. The only reason we stayed for that long was for the $80 175/10 internet. But that grandfathered plan is now $160, more expensive than 250/20.

Woke up to a ridiculous Rogers bill this month, and decided we're going to change. I always wanted to move to our phone to VoiP, but voip.ms wouldn't let me port my number. Family friend uses freephoneline.ca and highly recommend it.

So far my "grey market" satellite has been a waste, it doesn't have content for me, not to say it wouldn't be great for others but cricket from QualaLampur just isn't my thing. OTA is great , the quality is HD, we get about 33 channels and local news is all we really want. $90.00 HD tiger direct antennae gets this done. I'm using WDTV (western digital) steaming box from best buy $90.00, I'm not tek clever and was told this one was mostly plug and play, I don't need a PC or laptop in the way and its been pretty reliable. I'm about $100. per month ahead from the old cable bill and my initial investment is paid back. Could not be happier.

How's freephoneline work? Have a PC on all the time and a phone plugged into a card in it? That what you pay for...the card?

I've had freephoneline for about 18 months. I would say it's been about 95% reliable. God help you if it does goes down, their tech support might as well not exist. You are much better off saving yourself the agony and waiting/hoping that it goes back up on it's own. Thankfully, I've only had to call them once which resulted in nothing but stress and anger on my part, but the phone went backup an hour later on it's own. Rare that I've had an outage of more than ten minutes, and knock on wood, it's been pretty good lately

The system works by having a VOIP adapter (Linksys PAP2T in my case, around $50) plugged into your internet router, your phone is plugged into the VOIP adapter. The $50 or whatever you pay them at setup is basically a login for your adapter to be able to access their system.

Use testmy.net for a more accurate speed test.

Ookla and other popular sites Aare tuned to not throttle some ISP's so they get 'great' speediest results.

MagicJack is another phone option you can consider. They have a voip app as well.
