New rider here, just wondering if theres any other option than puting your bike in a truck or trailer to get it to the shop for the safety so its able to get plated.

like is there a one day permit you can pull?

Yes if you have valid insurance, you can go to the MOT and get plates with a temporary sticker. It lasts 15 days or something like that.

What he said.^^
But you may need me to ride it over for ya. ?

There is a dude in this forum called "Toyhauler" I think that's how its spelt. He can do an on the go safety.. this way you don't have to risk riding without insurance/plate..

Just a clarification - the above only applies if the ownership is not 'unfit'.

Meh. I just did it, you know? I had the insurance and no plate. They wouldn't give me a temp plate. I just rode it up to the shop on the backroad and got the certy. Screw 'em. Too many rules in this commie province.

When I bought my bike in the fall I called the ministry ahead of time, to confirm the process, despite having a "fit" title, they still wouldn't issue me a temp sticker. Clerk and manager were insistent that it couldn't be done for a bike. I had the pages printed off the website explaining the procedure, but they wouldn't budge.

This is what I did as well.. I just took it to a CT that was about 5 mins from my house.. and rode it back..

Ride plateless is always an option :lmao:

swap a plate from another bike is better...its what I did. Draws much less attention and I only had to go 6-7 km's

I had a pedestrian point out to me that my plate was half hanging off and contacting my rear tire. I just pulled over, ripped it off, stuck in my pocket (not a great move as it was covered with road grime on the back) and just continued my ride without any issues. Then got some better zip ties (bike wasn't supposed to be street legal so the mounting holes on the fender are wrong so I just zip tie it on there).

Yep, if it's in your name but listed on the ownership as UNFIT then you can't get a temp.

Out of curiousity, I did some reading on the HTA on this one.

It looks like the fine and outcome for operating with plates not registered to a vehicle is actually quite a nasty one under R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 12 (1). Minimum $100-$1000 fine (officer discretion, no set value) and they can also suspend your licence for up to 6 months. It also seems like it's a "Major" for insurance purposes, but the licence suspension will also trash insurance for a long time to come with that charge. They can also seize the incorrect plates.

Fine for no plates at all (HTA 85.1) starts at $200 (And can go up to $20K depending on officer discretion, it's a "no set fine" charge), and no valtag (which would probably come along with it) is $85. Unclear if this is a "minor" or "Major" to an insurance company but the penalty is pretty significant either way.

Yes, much less likely to attract attention vs no plates at all for a short trip to a dealership, but it seems like using incorrect ones is a much nastier charge in the end.

FWIW, Uhaul rents purpose built motorcycle trailers for about $15/day. Might save a lot of potential heartache in the end for the OP. ;)

I've always used a nice friend with a pickup truck. Which works out well.

how does it work in my situation?

i bought my bike in october last year. i never transfered the ownership to my name yet.

the ownership currently has previous owners named and signed.

it doesn't say unfit on it though.

will i be able to get temps?

As long as it's still in the FIT status from the previous owner and they also fully filled out the back of the ownership properly you should be able to get a temp but you will need proof of insurance. The second you transfer it into your name without a safety however it will show as "UNFIT" and you're no longer eligible for temps.

i have insurance but i need temps so i can ride it to a shop and get safety...

Re read my reply. If you have the previous owners ownership (as you should, of course) filled out, and it was certified roadworthy (FIT) under his name (it'll show "FIT" on the top of it) you can get temps under your own name so long as you can prove insurance.

Only situation where it would not be eligible is if the previous owner had it registered as UNFIT (ie, never had it on the road), or you transfer it into your name BEFORE being able to provide a safety, at which point it would be registered in your name as UNFIT and you would not be eligible for plates or sticker at all. In either of those situations there's no way to get a temp as there's no way to get it into FIT status without having it certified.

Here's an example of a "FIT" vehicle ownbership, see top edge of it, although it shows "PAS" for passenger car. "COM" is commercial, and "MCL" is motorcycle IIRC.

An uncertified vehicle would show it's class (PAS, COM, or MCL) and - "UNFIT" instead of "FIT".

This is what I do as well. The first time I had a friend follow me by car to obfuscate my empty plate holder. I agree some of the rules in this province are unnecessarily complex and stupid.
