Getting out of the supersport scene...

BTW - That XR650L is no slouch in the top speed if you care to let it loose..

On mine I had over 10K into mods on it/in it. I took it to an ole dirt airplane track that was 2 miles long. Me and some buddy's went to you around and race a bit. My one buddy seen is unloading and he's a cop he was on duty so we asked if he could speed check us with his radar gun. He sat about 1.5 miles down track and checked each of us. One guy had a 92 banshee that was junk and hit 87 mph. One guy had a 04yfz450 with tons of money dumped into it for a flat track quad. He hit 93mph. One guy had a 01 yz426 bone stock and hit 78mph. I ran the track with my ole' trusty XR and hit 136 mph. I felt like I was gonna die but boy was it a fun.

I'm always amazed how fast Ken will ride getting to the off road sites.....the KLR is labouring along and he can just runaway at any time. Quite the machine.

Luggage AND a passenger? I'd be looking at something bigger than a 650.

I wouldn't - if he is doing any off pavement at all the 650 is the better choice and lots tour two up with luggage on the mid beemers and the weestrom.

They are full size frames and suspension.
The weight, fuel and initial cost penalty not to mention higher insurance costs would not make any sense to go to a litre IMNSHO

The CB500x on the other hand would not be appropriate as suspension and HP are on the low side for two up even tho it is a full frame bike ( the companion CBR500s are smaller frame ).

depends...

that's been around :) but I think that particular "buddy" is a tad more than the 60kg OP quoted .
Easy wheelies tho. :D

Triumph Tiger 800, or 800 XC if you plan on more time off road.

yup - bark busters and bash plate on already. Decent screen you can look over but will still do highway okay.

Similar seating to your FZ - maybe a bit more upright and that appears to be a shaft drive. Hits a lot of good points.

It is. Still like my wee. I'm 5'11, 185#. Tour 2 up with bags without issues. I put around 30k km a year on it with only regular maintenance and replacement of wear parts. A plus is I'm not terribly worried about someone stealing it.

Wow, thank you guys so much for your replies. You've given me a LOT to research.

Incidentally, I went today for a ride on my GSXR, the first time after the F650. I'm not feeling the bike anymore. The gearing is all wrong for Canada, where I can get a speeding ticket in 1st gear on the 401. And it's such a gutless wonder under 8k rpm, that it removes all fun in the city. The riding position is all wrong for long distance, the seat is hard and the bike is just so twitchy. Sigh, I'm getting old, because I remember how much I waited for this GSXR, and how much I loved it when I first got it. I still love it, but my priorities have obviously changed a lot.

That said, I have a lot of research to do now. The Tiger XC looks great, and I also saw a KTM 1190 Adventure at the Forks today. But I am afraid to ask how much they cost. My budget is fairly limited mind you...

Not getting old - just getting sensible.
My kid bought a mild but full sport seating bike as his first then tried to go riding to the good roads.

He now has an FZ8.

He still can't do 1,000 km days but he sure has fun in the twists and it's fine for commuting.

May not work with the budget and they are pigs in the dirt, but since you looked at the big ktm, just throwing this out there.
