Gaspe 2024

Gaspe is one of the places I've been wanting to ride out to, ever since I started riding and this year I have some time to do it - probably in July.

Heading out from the GTA, I was thinking about going through the northeastern states to get there and then follow the south shore of the St. Lawrence to come home. I plan to spend a day or two riding around the interior of Gaspe as well. The whole trip would be around 8 days - either camping or motels, or both. I've already been out to to Cabot Trail and have a feeling PEI is more of a place to drive to than ride, so I haven't included either of those areas.

Something like: View attachment 66895

I'm not too concerned about getting out there or back as fast as possible, since I'm always looking for the most fun and scenic roads to travel on.

For those that have done it, is it very scenic to go through southern Quebec to get out there, or is it a more interesting ride going through the Northeastern states?
Thanks!
North shore Baie Como to QC is spectacular

Yes totally agree and did that last year, all the way to end of the paved road. The ride to Manic Cinq from Baie Comeau is super sweet too.

First the answer to your question - Is it scenic through Southern Quebec? In my opinion, it's very scenic! Definitely keep that in mind.

I did Gaspe in 2022. I didn't ride, I drove. Did a family trip. I recommend taking the southern route up and the northern route down. That way you'll be riding on the near side of the water body throughout. A lot of interesting places en-route Perce.

I would have suggested the northern shore of the St Lawrence, but you have already done that route.

We stayed for 2 nights in Perce and then for a night in a Yurt within Forillion. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I don't know how often you plan to stop and view historic sites along the way but there were quite a few on our route from Edmunston to Perce:

  • Pointe-au-Père Maritime Historic Site
  • Battle of the Restigouche National Historic Site
  • Parc national de Miguasha
  • Parc national de l'Île-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Percé
  • Pointe Bonaventure Lighthouse

The only caution about S Quebec anywhere within a couple hours of Montreal .....weekends are just jammed with traffic. The further north you can stay the better. Lots of wildlife, I was almost decapitated by a size large turkey that just exploded from the edge of the road....also the only place I've seen an otter crossing the road.
The other downside is the road quality is very erratic...some are superb, others downright scary.
Quebec is the only place I've seen a sign warning motorcycles of tar snakes....with good reason too.
Careful of your fuel on when staying north, stations can sometimes be closed on Sundays. Had to borrow some gas from a marina when we ran short coming down the northern transCanada from Rouyn-Noranda....a chilly ride starting at 9C.
We chose this route out of Sauga avoiding Montreal entirely.

Good memories with the kid tho the $300 each ticket in Gaspé was a downer ...my fault entirely - safely passing a dawdling tourist on a double line ...legal in Ontario...not so in Quebec. Dad paid.

Not sure why I havn't caught this thread before. I've been thinking I too want to ride the Gaspe this summer. Hopefully shortly after the Superbike race s in August. Maybe a KLR buddy or two, possibly maybe some from here.
Now off to read the thread from the start.

I know someone who has a KLR that might take you up on that offer if you’re looking for a riding buddy 👍😂

I'll be keeping that in mind.

For those that have done Gaspe, would there be lots of opportunity to rough/vagrant camp along the way?

Looking on the sat map I see lots of wind farms along the top of Gaspe. Anyone know if there is access, looking to mix up the coast with some climbs above and away from traffic and in the dirt. Anyone ventured onto the gravel?

Now that my buddy has cancelled on going to Deals Gap, I'm starting to reconsider going to Gaspe this year.

I think I can get off work anytime between Aug 1-18 and thinking of going for 7-9 days.

Not planing on doing any long distances of gravel and not planning on many super long days either. Most likely staying in motels or AirBnB's, but if there's not many options still available, then I would be open to camping as well.

Anyone down for a road trip sometime in early August?

Maybe go via Rouyn-Noranda and explore a few of the dirt roads in that part of Quebec and stay to the north of Montreal and Quebec City. August might be tough to get places.
Those shady areas are all parks

not planning on many super long days either.
You going soft? ;)

Seriously though, you might get more takers if you got more "reasonable" on your trips ... not everyone has the iron-butt drive you have (respect there) or wants to risk getting too tired near the end of a sunrise-to-sunset ride, etc..

I'm keen to do Gaspe about that time but my hip/knee combo ensures there are no "super long days". What kind of daily mileage do you envision?

Ha! Too true…:)

And I am getting soft - my tires only get wear on the centre’s lately.

A trip to Gaspe wouldn’t be crazy mileage. That’s a trip for going a bit slower and stopping and seeing stuff. If I had to guess it would be 2 days to get there, 3 days riding around and then 2 days to get home. I’d have to map it out, but I’d guess the days getting there and back would be around 8hrs of riding each with some shorter stops along the way, and the days staying there could be closer to 6 hrs with even more time for stopping.

Someone I know who went in peak season a few years ago stayed in New Richmond as a base and said it worked really well.

I definitely want to ride around the coast in each direction and also do the interior roads. And bring my running shoes and go for some hikes or runs along the coast.

I'd be up for it if it's the week of Aug 5, I have that entire week off.
