Gasket Leak on my GS500F...At least thats what it seems

I thought the gasket was that ring thing around the filter? <_<

I wish that was the case.. that'd be soo much less of a hassle. Nah, the oil on both of our bikes are coming out of the left side engine cover.

better watch it... yours could be next :D

They say that if your GS500 isn't leaking oil, then that's probably because it's empty

He posted a diagram, move along if you can't follow the story.

A gasket is basically a... umm... basically a seal that rests between 2 surfaces, to stop things from leaking between them.
The ring around the filter is also called a gasket, but in this case it's the left side crankcase cover gasket.

Motorcycle mechanics basics, commonly used terms and descriptions:

Gasket - rubber infused fiber sheet sandwiched between 2 flat surfaces to prevent leakage.

O-ring - rubber ring or enclosed shape sandwiched between 2 grooves to prevent leakage.

Yes there are variations but these are the most common types of non-liquid oil sealants.

lmao are all of our gs' leaking. Bah ha ha. My buddy is coming over Saturday morning to check it out. Good thing it's time for an oil change anyways.

Mine's been leaking for awhile, been a little lazy fixing it because it's only a tiny amount.

Just gotta make sure it stays topped up and it's good to go lol. Once it starts leaking a pint every few days then I'll be worried.

I am working 8am -6pm Saturday by yonge and stclair. Have a huge parking lot with lots of tools in the building. We can probably work together fix all our bikes at the same time. Let me know if that works for you guys. We can stay there as long as we like.

I'd love to, but I'm out of town this Saturday.. I think I'll be working on my bike Sunday. Sounds like a great place though

We can do it Sunday as well. I am the supervisor with all access plus nobody there after Friday evening to Monday morning. Lots of free space, Internet as well. I am not sure we have all the tools so it will be a good idea to bring some just in case.

Sounds tempting.. I wouldn't have a problem bringing tools, but it'd be difficult for me to bring an oil pan haha any chance there's one (or more if we're doing both bikes at once) there?

is it the '08s that are bleeding out? i have an 06 with about 16k on it. no problems save a couple new batteries. how much mileage do you guys put on your gs's?

Me and Freaks are '08, not sure about Sabex and Raf.

I abuse the engine quite a bit, lots of time over 6k RPM, especially on the highway for the power, so it burns a lot of oil. If it isn't burning it then it's leaking it (it's not too serious of a leak, just a bother). Aside from that its done everything I've asked of it without trouble so I'm happy

My 05 had a leak from brand new and I had a hard time finding it. Ended up being the head gasket and was done under warranty.

My sig host the information for my bike.

I run the **** out of it also, and it works flawlessly (well, as flawless as a gs can be without lots of mods! lol)

Bought mine November 2010 and its a 2010. Put 16 on her already but been riding harder lately since I figured out where my power band is.

I am sure we can arrange for something along those lines.....lemme check with the building operator.
