Gas stations & motorcycles rant!

Never been refused at the pump. On Tuesday morning, at about 5:45, I did have an attendant try to tell me something over the intercom, a couple of times though. No idea what. I just looked up at the camera and shouted, "I can't hear you. I'm wearing a helmet", then went back to filling up.

Oh, and I always pay at the pump too.

Not going to spend 5 1/2 minutes listening to that rant and it was hard to tell whether you were prepaying are just inserting some kind of air miles card?

Took a trip down to the states and every station there requires you prepay before they turn on the pump. It was a major PITA since I could not use my credit card at the pump. Every time you try to use your credit card it request that you enter your zip code (no letters on the pad, so can't prepay with credit card at the pump). USA isn't chip enabled so card number theft is still rampant down there. I ended up getting my number stolen while I was down there and my card was canceled.

I was mentioning to the Wife that station up here will be following the prepay only scheme sometime. I'm sure it will be phased in over that next couple years.

If you use the three numbers from your zip code with two zeros on the end it works.

I believe it is against regulations to not get off the motorcycle to pump your gas.
Kids are also not allowed to pump your gas. Is that discrimination?
You can't put gas in a water can or any other non certified gas container.
You can't smoke, talk on your phone, or leave the car or bike running.

I've never gotten off my bike while fueling and I've never had a problem. I've even rolled out of the way when I was paying cash so someone else can come in and get gas and still haven't had a problem.... Had more problems with my car though, once I pressed the wrong thing for my debit card and I cancelled the transaction and the dude wouldn't let me start over.... I yelled at him when he came on the intercom and he apologized and let me pump gas. lol

A new gas station opened up by me and I've gone there a few times in my car. Never had a problem paying at the pump. Every single time I've gone on the bike, I get the "please see attendant" message.

I don't like going there any more.

I feel the same way and probably won't be going back to the places that gave me a hard time either.

Get off the bike, now I wonder how many does that!

I do, it just seems silly not to. Of course, it's your decision, but to the potential of spilling gas over a hot motor and hot exhaust pipes is not a worthwhile risk in my eyes. (There are plenty of other risks that to me are worth taking but at least with those I get some pleasure out of them.)

I was surprised to see that most American gas stations are pre-pay only though.

I never had any issues, but generally prepay if I can. It isn't jsut US gas stations, though. When I spent four days riding in Alberta and BC this summer I found that it was now the law in BC to prepay. Most places did that, although a few backwoods places didn't worry about it.

I stay on the bike because it seems safer to me, the bike is far less likley to fall or get knocked over. The chance of spilling gas seems minor I have never had any issue, but I have had a brand new bike fall over at a gas station.

Recently I was at my usual gas station and the attendant told me (over the intercomm) to get off the bike when filling it. I found it odd as I have never been told that before....and i was already halfway done.

The reason for that is to prevent explosions. If you're sitting on a seat it's possible to create friction by swaying back and forth on your seat. This would trigger a spark and an in turn an explosion.

<-- Link to a video where it shows how static electricity can cause fires from sitting back on your seat.

Is your bike any more likely to fall over at a gas station than it is any other time you put it on the stand?

Yes it is a busy area and confined, the bike is usually close to a large curb and you are walking around it. The ground is also greasy with gas and oil.

Is it always the same guy? maybe he doesent like you? maybe you stole his wifes job? maybe you f&^%$# his wife?

In all the forums I have read, and all the biker chat I have had, not once have I heard this happened to anyone.

It is easier to spill gas while filling motorcycle than on a car.

Maybe you look like a previous thief.

nice rant, and best of luck getting gas!

I always pay at the pump and sit on my bike as i add gas. Especially when i fill up i like to stand it upright off the kickstand to fill it RIGHT up. I've been told one downtown Brampton to "please get off the motorcycle and fuel". They even have a book of rules with pictures of the right and wrong things costomers do when fueling. Stupid. I refused to go to that gas station now. I feel safer pumping on my bike for the sake of my bike and also so i can fill it all the way.

Happened to me once, i was refused because i was SITTING on my bike. Cashier asked me to stand up! guess my aars and the plastic on the seat create some kind of a static charge that will blow up the gas station!! (some people need to go back to 4th grade science class)!
