Gas station discrmination

Was at a Shell station (Argentia/Winston Churchill in 'Sauga) and tried to fill up with a pre-authorized credit card payment. For some reason, two of the pumps refused to dispense and I was forced to go inside and meet the Attendant. Meanwhile, I noticed a car drawing up at one of the very same dispensers and the person was able to pre-pay and fill up without an issue. The Attendant tried to compel me to hand over my card inside to him to swipe with a warning that my card may not be "recognized" outside.
I refused this "favour" and told him that if the card does not work, I will come inside and pay.
Voila, my card then worked outside and I was able to pay and fill-up.
The games that these people play just because we are on a motorcycle :-(

If you were sitting on the bike while fueling up thats prob why the refusal. Potential static spark igniting.

its interesting, I just had a work trip out in BC Squamish. and a few of the gas stations had signs posted saying do not stay on the motorcycle to refuel.

Never thought this would be a static issue. Can't really think why it would since you should be grounded.....

I think the act of getting off the bike would generate more static charge than staying on it.

Maybe they're more worried that you'll topple over and spill gas everywhere...

Likely the attendant was told by management to force riders to come in to pay...for whatever reasons - stolen tapped card, ride offs, topples, etc...

This one probably didn't know how to explain why, so just said that bs to get you off the bike and inside.

I've seen a rider almost tip over when filling because they stood the bike up to get the tank level to get that extra gas in the tank, then tried to put the hose back in the holster which caused the issue. There could be quite a few reasons they didn't want you filling, but they really didn't know which one it was so they just made you come in.

Like s good citizen, I had dismounted and the bike was on the side stand. But as the others have explained, the incident was probably due to either a management directive or the attendant's ignorance. What puzzles me is that I had pre-authorized payment and there was no question of dissppearing, bill unpaid.
Whatever the reason, this is discrimination against bikers.
Will I change going there? .... prolly not, I refuse to be discriminated against just because I turn up on two wheels. :)

I've had the same situation the OP describes happen to me, regardless of what I'm trying to fill up.
I'd bet if he had rolled on over to a different pump your card would have worked fine...
'Could have been a problem with the card reader, the card or both.

I figure if I use a gas pump 100 times I'm going to have a problem with at least a few... 'Just the odds man.

I go to a few certain Shell stations and start by going inside. Pick up my lottery ticket. Have a Modular so that helps that I am not hiding anything.(Maybe a few spots. He He)
From then on, I give them a quick hello wave. Fill up and never a problem. How many times has someone come up to us and said thank you for being a biker? Never. We have a reputation. Will it ever change? Nope, never.. Moral of the story. We have to live with it.

I use pay at the pump EXCLUSIVELY.

I've never had a station deny me that service on my bike or in my truck. If they did I'd put the nozzle back in the pump and move on to the next station.

There's plenty of places willing to take my money.

Hey guys, did you try Shell EasyPay? Not all gas stations support it but it basically allows to pay using app on the phone instead of your card..

The attendant trying to skim your card like Brian suggests is a farm more likely cause vs any "discrimination" against riders.

Perhaps they figured rider on shiny motorcycle more likely to have more disposable income = bigger bank account balance = better target.

Maybe he was an American.
... the attendant that is.

Next time you go there pay in small coins.

Agreed, what Brian and Private Pilot say - a probable attempt to skim the card which is why the Attendant was being "difficult" (am being polite). Especially since the same credit card worked outside at the same pump after I made a ruckus. Glad to get all the feedback, it has opened my eyes!.

I believe it is actually written somewhere that you are not allowed to dispense fuel while seated on the bike.
It is also not allowed for a minor to dispense fuel into your car.

Was it an amex? An attendant once told me his station won't let amexes pay at the pump due to some kind of theft problem with them.

It was a Visa card.
As mentioned, the same card later worked outside at the same pump after I went inside, met the Attendant and protested.
