Gas prices expected to soar overnight

Yikes!

Mass media still fail to recognize the result of inflation on prices of goods like oil.

TORONTO, Ont. - It may be wise to fill up on gas before 12 a.m., as fuel prices across the GTA are expected to soar.

Once the clock hits 12:01, Torontonians can expect to see 140.1 at the pumps - a 4.5-cent jump from the current price which may break records.

En-Pro's Roger McKnight told 680News the market has indicated that the price will jump because wholesale prices are at the highest level since April of last year - when gas in Toronto hit a record 140.8 cents per litre.

"Our refinery situation is an import situation. Even though demand is down for gasoline in both Canada and the United States, demand is high for exports, so all in all, gasoline inventories have to drop," he said.

Should costs rise beyond that level, it will be the highest since 2008, when prices first spiked to an all time record.

However, McKnight told 680News the price jump has nothing to do with gouging.

"Gasoline prices in Canada don't recognize the 49th parallel. Everything is dependent on what happens in the wholesale market in the United States," he explained.

680News took to the streets to find out how people plan on coping with the jump at the pumps, and most said this isn't unexpected.

"It's nothing new. Every summer we have this problem. Come summer, it gets better and we want to enjoy good driving here and there, and the gas prices go up," one woman said. "What can we do?"

"What are you going to do?" agreed one man. "It's up to the government to do something, but they don't care because they make taxes and that, right?"

"Let's boycott City Hall," said another man. "You gotta pay, right? Ride a bike."

McKnight is expecting another gas price increase Wednesday evening.

The high price at the pumps is also affecting auto sales.

What is this inflation of which you speak? When was this invented???

This is bull, the extra 2.70$ is going to break the bank. I'm going to loose my house... I better go take my Prozac.

I don't understand why people worry about the cost of gas. We pay less than most of the world, plus we ride motorcycles! I average 4.5 l per 100 km on my F800R so I can't complain.

Super high gas prices will cause some people to switch from driving to public transit. And others to drive less. Others can carpool and split the cost of gas and benefit from HOV lanes.

If you live out in the 'burbs then hopefully your city will create office buildings and places to work close to you so that you don't have to drive to work.

I haven't participated in a price of gas thread here yet. We'll see how it goes :)

why?
the price that we pay for just about everything is affected by the cost of petroleum ether as a raw material or in the shipping of the product but hey why should we care

Then that would force some to buy less. Which is a good thing.

Because most of us ALSO drive cars (or the insane ones like me drive gas-guzzling Jeeps). Gas prices here are higher than in the states. Example; Windsor (which usually has rates lower than the GTA) is higher than Detroit. It seems like a few cents or few dollars here and there, but my vehicles (total) consume approx. 5,000L/yr. Still seem insignificant?

For me, I'm slowly transitioning to working from home and I'm looking at a new vehicle which is much better rated on fuel than my Jeep (which is EVERY vehicle). The Jeep will become more of a toy.

Oh I definitely understand how it'll affect people like yourself who have to buy lots of gas. But high gas prices cause people to drive less. I don't own a car because it's much cheaper to buy a Metropass. You and I and many others not commuting by car is a great thing for the environment!

Plus you'll benefit from working from home. I congratulate you on that; I wish I could do the same.

You seem to be missing the point that higher has prices will cause the price of just about everything to go up.

Does anyone honestly believe the price of oil is going to go down? Seriously??

Its will go down .........a couple of cents between each 10 cent increase.

In the next 10 years it's projected that the number of cars in China will double, exceeding 200 million vehicles. Think about that! Where's that gas coming from?? I suspect many people's driving habits will change in the next 10 years..I'd hate to be a 1 hour commuter...

My service van gets horrible fuel mileage, our bucket trucks are even worse.

I would hate to be a customer who needs electrical work in the future.

We are all getting the shaft.
