Garmin Zumo on sale

Yep. So give me an Android based HWGPS, but for whatever reason no one is making them, except for the aviation use, but they cost more than a plane.

Well, in a few years, the HWGPS market is going to wither away and die on the vine anyway. If touch-screen TFT screens will be ubiquitous across all vehicles, then casting Google Maps/Waze or whatever 3rd party GPS app onto the TFT will be the preferable mechanism for just about everyone but the most die-hard of HWGPS lovers, which isn't me BTW.

I think it looks stupid to have so many screens in front of you, including a phone or HWGPS.

Lightcycle, What yr was the AT? And did you have any complaints or all positive.

It was a 2021, I believe. Mostly positive. The ATAS is a bit top-heavy because of the extra fuel capacity. Didn't get a chance to take it off-road, but on road, it was a nice machine, handled well. Under-steered a little in tight corners because of the long-wheelbase, but tracked fantastically on the highway. I'm not a fan of electronic aids, but the fact you can dial in the amount of engine braking in each riding mode was pretty cool.

The touchscreen dash was very trick, I haven't seen that on any other bike before. All motorcycles should have one, IMO.

I think I read somewhere that TomTom devices are android based. No idea if that’s true, I haven’t had one for years. I also remember the brief window where Google maps let you make routes and export them to Garmin devices easily. It was so brief for me that the elation of being able to do so only lasted a week or two. I just want to be able to open a map on my Ipad, tap a few waypoints, get a route to fit then drag and alter the route as I see fit and then send that to the garmin. It appears that this level of simplicity still isn’t possible.

As for phones, the camera on my old Samsung phone went on the fritz with moderate vibrations. No way am I sitting my Note in a cradle and subjecting it to the same thing.

Yeah, Apple put out a warning on their support website a few years ago:

It's the optical image stabilization HW that gets ruined by all the vibration. Lots of sob stories on the Internet about phone cameras being rendered inoperable by mounting them on motorcycle handlebars.

My bike killed my phone camera last year. That’s the main reason why I went for a separate device.

Not me, but in case anyone is looking for a cheaper deal on a GPS. Hard to beat $300 for a Zumo 595
