French government mandating hi-vis gear for all riders

In all likelihood they're gonna mandate that 150cm2 arranged in stripes to be visible from all sides.

Equipment required for motorcyclesNot later than 1 January 2013, all drivers or passengers of a motorcycle with a cylinder capacity exceeding 125 cm3 or a vehicle of category L5e a capacity exceeding 15 kW, must wear a provided with a Equipment reflective, corresponding either to French standards or other standards to ensure an equivalent level of safety, provides the order of January 3, 2012.This equipment, in one or more parties must be a total surface area of at least 150 cm2.If this equipment is not built from the beginning to the garment, it is superimposed by any means (safety vest). The equipment must be worn on the upper body, with the exception of the helmet, from the belt line of the shoulders, so as to be visible to other road users.Note that in the course of 2012, the Ministry of Transport could also make the wearing of gloves and shoes suitable for driving a bike.

I'd rather take their hi-vis law rather than our street racing law, I can tell you that much.

Idiocy as usual. I've seen worse.. In Serbia, you're not allowed to have earbuds in your ear or talk on your cell while crossing the street. You have to carry about 100lbs of various safety and repair gear in your car and all of that gets inspected by bribe-hungry cops.

What are the OTHER cops doing?

Playing with fairies and unicorns.. The tickets down there are steep, but the bribes are reasonable (about 10-20%), unless you've got a foreign DL, in which case the bribe goes up to 50% (don't ask me how I found out after making a very common mistake for out-of-town drivers in a poorly signed intersection)

It's going to get pretty tough to tell the regular BMW riders from the cops. Even here, riding a bike that looks nothing like a cop bike and wearing hi-viz that looks nothing like Toronto cop gear, I seem to occasionally be mistaken for a cop.

How do you know you are you mistaken for a cop? Do they give you the finger or something?

I point and they obey. I've had this happen many times when I'm trying to make a left from Shuter, onto Yonge south, when some dirtwad is holding everything up by trying to make an illegal right turn out of the mall parking structure, for example. I also had a family pull up next to me and ask if I was a "professional rider", whatever that means on the street
