I'm OK with this idea providing it's in School Zones. Why waste cop dollars enforcing speed traps?
School safety zones are already well marked, there are phone apps that tell you speed limits where you are driving -- for those dumb enough to speed through school zones maybe this will help with training.
I'm the first guy (in this case second) to distrust government or large organizations like Google, Facebook, Amazon etc. (the purveyors of surveillance capitalism) but in this case I'm not bothered that much. They'll issue tickets that have no demerit points attached because they won't know who's driving, just like red light cameras. It's pretty cut & dried; if they catch you speeding or running a red light you get a ticket.
This is how it starts, and it's only a matter of time then till these cameras start appearing everywhere and not just on school zones. 400 Highways will be fun, when the majority does 120+ km/h, just imagine everyone doing exactly 100 km/h on the 400 highways, go east on the 401 towards Kingston and see how much fun trucks have passing each other doing exactly 105 on the dot. In an area plagued with congestion and terrible drivers, the government wants to continue cashing in on "speeding" instead of fixing the real problems to improve safety and traffic flow. Left lane bandits run the show in Ontario, you'd think you're driving in the UK ? It's amazing how there is absolutely zero initiative from the government to tackle this serious traffic issue that leads to congestion and accidents, when the right lane is being used for merging into the road and pass at the same time! Speed limits in Ontario are set low on purpose (not talking about school zones) so the gov and insurance companies can cash in on speeds that everyone can do safely, which is evident with the traffic flow being generally at least 10 km/h or higher than the posted speed limits. As if the government removed all posted speed limits, everyone would be doing 200+ km/h on congested roads. If you want to save lives from accidents, how about enforcing lane discipline, and raising the limits to make sense for the road conditions? Oh wait, there's no $afety in that...
Not sure I understand this. Ya think you have some constitutional right to speed in school zones? Driving is a privileged, and as much as I hate government intrusion, when it comes to the safety of others (like my family) I have to give them the latitude and tools needed.
Or you can keep your freedom to wail past a school -- and some dad will keep his freedom to throw rocks as you pass.
Don’t get your panties in a twist. All that happens in Europe is people slow down in the areas where the cameras are and it’s business as usual elsewhere. You’ll get a ticket if you’re not paying attention and to be frank, if you’re not paying attention and driving you deserve one.
Problem is that kids are getting killed in school zones. By selfish idiots who refuse to slow down. If photo radar is the only way to stop it, then I'm all for it. I think speed bumps would be more effective. As for photo radar on 400 highways, I'm all for it in the problem areas - no fine, just points. There just isn't enough police to get the job done and some highways are race tracks.
Doug Ford didn't approve this. It was Wynne who changed the law that would allow municipalities to use photo radar in safety zones like schools. Just wait the City of Toronto will designate the entire City as a "Safety Zone" and it will be fair game to install everywhere.
