Power comes from a ‘HFC4DA1-2B1′ 2.8 liter four-cylinder diesel engine that poops out 108hp

the second episode of top gear from this season has james and jeremy going to china where you see an X5, mini and a something else knockoff...apparently BMW went to court to argue the blatant copy and the government said they look nothing alike...go china, land of the unimaginative...

108hp?? What's the torque...60ft/lbs? Lol.

Unless that truck is made of aluminum, that engine is gonna burn out under any strain (nevermind towing/cargo; uphill with crosswinds are gonna make that baby whine like a lawnmower engine).

It's a diesel.

The 2nd show of Season 18 of Top Gear show the Chinese car industry progress. They said don't knock the Chinese considering how far and fast they have come up. They said it'll be in 5 years before they start selling well made cars of their own design.

and you obviously missed the blurb on how they blatantly rip off other designs from other manufaturers...oh, say, BMW...and hey, go back a few years and you can watch the episode about the rolls royce knockoff too...

it's about status over there...you only have to have the look of the car, they couldn't care less about what's under the hood...F150 knockoff with 108HP, 2.8L diesel is gonna produce how much torque, maybe 170-180lbft...i can only imagine it weighs the same...lol...0-60 times measured by how many grey hairs sprout while you wait for it to get up to speed...

u guys r suprised by chinese knock off vehicles? Did you know they also copied facebook, youtube, ebay and whatever else the West invented first...?

I despite their lack of innovation

Read up on how North American manufacturers ripoff small companies and individuals that don't have enough lawyer dollars to fight them.
Are you suggesting the Chinese are copying our designs or our business ethics?

Reading this string of replies you might get the idea that its wrong for China to make their own cars to sell to their own citizens at prices that reflect their incomes.
The only copying I see is the "look"... and well.... copying looks have been rampant in the auto industry for eons.

Imitation is one thing, direct copying is an entirely different matter.

Chinese cars are garbage. They can't design anything themselves. But I doubt very many companies are going to complain too much considering that China both provides them with incredibly cheap labour, and provides them with the biggest middle class market in the world. I'm fairly sure last year was when the Chinese car market finally overtook the US as biggest in the world. The scales only tip further and further now. But I guess they'll need another 10-20 years before they can actually think for themselves.

Of course they are garbage, they are a new company, and they are selling cheap.
That 2000 dollar car by Tata was a piece of crap too, but hey it was 2000 bucks.

Even though you carry obvious bias, it is completely normal for new industries. There is no reason for them,or anyone else to reinvent the wheel.
Hyundai was founded in the 60s, didn't reach the US market till 20 years later, and wasn't respectable till 20 years after that.

Hyundais were decent cars even before they became popular in the US market. I don't care to do the research but I don't think they blatantly copied other manufacturer's designs line by line.

And no, I don't care what the Chinese build and sell to themselves. Its their country. I just hope that as these trends continue, someone somewhere high up will take notice and try to shift the trends back in our collective favour.

I guess I am missing the part that says that it isn't in our favor now.

There are no chinese car companies making cars in the US or even shipping cars to the US.
There are no Domestic car companies making cars in China to ship back to NA
There are lots of foreign companies shipping cars to China, or making cars there domestically.

Ontario became the most expensive place in the world to make cars, and jobs move back to the US or down to Mexico.

Essentially, the fact that China exists has no effect on our auto industry other than to create a market.

For example. I see nothing about China in this article

Im of the general opinion that the better they do (India and China, namely) the worse off we'll be.

Once they eventually create good enough products for themselves and the rest of the world, our use runs out. Not only will they have the consumer market, they'll also have it backed by a billion+ strong workforce controlled by an authoritarian government.

So far we (and I mean the west in general, not Canada specifically) can still utilize their labour to manufacture our superior products, which we can also sell to their emerging middle class. That farce won't last long. I don't wanna guess what happens when they're the ones designing, developing, manufacturing, and doing most of the buying of consumer products. :???:
