First Bike Crash - Advice Required

Call Franklin and Trevor and bust into the tow yard and steal the bike back out! Oh wait.. i've been playing too much GTA V.. nevermind..

So it IS possible to squeeze blood out of a stone. Wow.

Seriously, congrats on the happy ending. I'm shocked.

Glad this is resolved. I was a tow truck driver in a previous life so I have some comments that aren't coming out of my arse.
The trucks are often owned by drivers that work for a parent company, it may say XXX on the door but like taxis be owned by the driver. They can make pricing deals on the spot. If the police decide your vehicle is an hazard it gets towed by the company that has a contract with the police to provide first responder service.
They can keep your car until you pay the bill and charge daily storage. They dont have to release anything until paid. The warehousing and storage laws cover them. The big fence at the yard is not to keep the people out, it keeps the cars and bike in.
Most tow drivers are good guys and usually can understand unusual circumstance, they have kids and family to.

OP, do you have any medical benefits? See your dr and try to get some physiotherapy, you'll need it. Also try and stay away from sick people for a while...you may have noticed that coughing and sneezing hurts the hell out of your scapula.

X10. When I went down on my wrists I roughed it. My wrists never made a full recovery. People that break them and go through proper recovery are better off than me.

Just a quick note to say this thread ended really well. The guys at Quinn's Towing turned out to be stand-up guys. They understood the kids financial situation. The kid was given the "ok" to go and pick up his bike!

Quinn's Towing also offered that if any GTAM members in the Durham / Toronto area need a tow, if you mention "GTAMotorcycle", they will give you 15 percent off your tow! Only exclusions are HTA172 / DUI infractions. They can't on those charges as they are first responders. Great bunch of guys actually! 416-809-5635 Ask for Nikko or Joel and mention "GTAM" to get your 15 percent discount.

excellent work.

OP - also good advice on the physio - I've been avoiding it as my shoulder was improving but it seems to have stalled so I think I have to ante up and get some physio for it as I'm losing my range of motion.

wow, I never thought you'd be able to get the bike from the yard for a discount, much less free (from what I'm understanding)

great work guys, I'll definitely be sure to post when I need help from GTAM

as per the rehab, I would strongly suggest you get rehab, look into your school's student medical plan to see what kind of coverage you have and try to negotiate with a rehab clinic so there is no cost to you preferably

otherwise you'll have to file a claim with StateFarm for them to pick up the bill on it

worse case scenario, read up on rehab strategies yourself and implement them because if you don't fix properly now, you'll end up with limited use for the rest of your life and it just doesn't make sense

The kids story ends well. There are still great people in the GTA!

I am assuming you talk to someone at Quinn's, on behalf of the OP. If that is correct, I commend you!

I wouldn't call insurance unless you want to be unable to afford to drive anything for awhile. I wouldn't have called OPP either. If you do that you're at risk of getting charged.

4. call CAA report dead bike (either wait for them as they require you to) or post on here or get a friend to come and wait with your bike for CAA

Owner of the CAA membership must be present during the TOW. Otherwise it's only 10km free after that it is some ridiculous quote

Well since you asked.
Since we/they/MLadin saved you $575 you can donate $50 to the sites charity of choice RFS.
Please post your receipt to show you did.

I further suggest that member call and or send them an email to thank them for helping a fellow biker. It demonstrates that we saw their positive/supportive response

Make the donation if you want to.
You don't need to post the receipt for me, i'll trust you if you say that you made it.
Calling / emailing those who truly helped you is a great idea as well.
Pay it forward when you can.

I am glad it worked out for you. Dealing with an accident and then tow truck drivers can be really scary and intimidating. Share your story with others, especially new riders, and maybe it'll help them if/when they get into the same situation.

First - Mladin - respect man. You are a stand up guy!

Second - what the hell is wrong with you posters dumping on this kid? He had a traumatic accident and broke his shoulder. Telling him he shouldn't be riding because he can't afford it??!! Really? What the hell is wrong with you?

Third - regarding the fees for emergency response - cops don't charge, ambulance charges if they transport (personally I refuse transport unless dying, just to embarass these leeches), fire dept often charges but SHOULD NOT!! They actually DO NOT have legal authority to gather the information they use to bill you. Refuse to pay them!! Nothing they can really do about it. Particularly if you threaten to sue them over violations of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

OP - sorry you had a momentary lapse and crashed. That happens. Don't sweat it. Glad you're relatively okay. Keep the rubber side down from here out.

What wrong with me? The kid is broke.. Can't afford **** and must pull a line to get services for free. if he can't afford a simple tow cause he cheaped out on insurance then there's other methods ie. tcc, pedal bike, etc., [probably wasn't or wearing china replica gear. sorry to say but this hobby is expensive,

Well I haven't exactly been here for long, but damn that's nice of them. I emailed them through the Kijiji ad to say thanks, and as a rider I will definitely be keeping their info on hand for if and when I ever need a tow.
Great to see other small business owners exercising compassion.
Nice one MLadin!

As for physio, not sure if this is an option but thought I'd throw it out there.. are there any physio schools in your area? Maybe they offer cheaper options for students, similar if you go to a dentistry school for cleanings?

Who the **** are you to judge? Especially with regards to the gear nazi comment. I'm glad there's more people like MLadin than people like you on these boards.

Though it's already been done, well done MLadin.

Guy sounds like a complete ****ing *******.

He's in the tow truck business. He knows damned well if he gives the bike back, he will likely never see his money.
He agreed to talk about it in person (this means cash).

I hate this attitude that "everyone should work for free except me". I'd like to see how you would feel if someone asked you to be cool about it, and not get paid this week.

It no longer applies to this situation but it's still an ethical gray area.

You know what businesses do when they start hitting red? They fire people. They don't hire people and not pay them. On the other hand, tow truck owners, cops handing out tickets, or individuals in general can be complete asshats by preying on victims that cannot even pay up to begin with. The problem is that within the "cannot pay up" type there are the ones who truly can't, and the cheap **** wads that screw it over for the poor and honest.

Don't get me wrong, I know what you're saying, I just think certain jobs need to apply some compassion and judgment, and clearly the owner of this tow company did =)
