Finally tried dirtbiking!

Good read. Thanks for sharing. :thumbright:

After years of street riding, finally got around to trying dirt... wrote an article about it, if anyone's interested...

btw if anyone out there's interested in writing paid articles about motorcycle touring (or boating, atving, snowmobiling), PM me... just started a new job commissioning articles.

Good article - I did Trail Tours about 6 years ago - did one session and liked it so much I signed on for two more. I wasn't looking to get a dirt bike, just wanted to be more comfortable with my street bike in less than optimal conditions. Absolutely great experience and I am one of those people who regularly say hit the dirt - next time you hit construction or a gravel road with potholes, you will be amazed how much more relaxed you are and trusting of what you and your bike can handle.

3 years in, and I'm wondering if I even need/care about street bikes. The dual sport I have does everything I want and does it cheaply.

The training at CMTS (http://www.cmts.org/) is also top notch, if I had the money I'd take their enduro training course today.

that too tho there is a bloody huge range of "dual sport".....some hard core and some not so practical ( tell me why you need 1200cc for dual sport)

o m g good read! sounds fun, I want to try dirt biking too, looks awesome and fun, how much would one of those session normally cost?

$250 for a full day on the weekend. A bit cheaper during the week, and they also have half-days and evenings: http://www.trailtour.com/need_to_know.html#cost

I went about a month ago and now I've got a dirtbike sitting in the garage... the street bike is probably going to start collecting dust.

Great article :) One thing I think you missed is that they include the dirt bikes in the package price. For the people not familiar with their setup it might be good to mention :)

Yep.. Our crew does it annually... And we're there soon!

Thanks for all the comments! Yeah, I hope I don't start neglecting my street bike... so many places to ride, so little time... would love to get a dual sport at some point, once the budget allows.

Now he has to try "real dirtbiking"'(two stroke). My RM250 is like trying to ride a chainsaw :)

Yeah buzzy light 2 strokes are heart stoppers.
Kid was scared when he started on the YZ250.

Really scared tho on the CR450R - not for the faint of heart.

I've never ridden a 2-stroke before, but I've heard some things... twitchy and unpredictable, is my understanding. This may be a foolish question, but is it really THAT different from a 4-stroke..?

quite. the powerband is tiny, and if you drop too low, you stall.

Yeah... when you say Enduro, Dual Sport and ADV bike you're going to get so many different opinions. To me a dual sport is something that's actually off-road capable and tuned for at least 50/50 use. That would include bikes as big as the KLR 650 and the DR650, but not the V-Strom or F800GS.

Come on Pat, your telling me you wouldnt want to drag a sunken up to its seat V-storm out of Dave's water hole of lament?

Never. Absolutely never :) I watched a video of the ODSC guys pulling a big GS out of a hole 1/2 as bad as that one on the Bethany ride this spring. Do not want.
