Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

LG Dishwasher flooded the kitchen floor the other day. Final straw, it’s had 4 callouts since new I think for various issues and it’s now out of extended warranty.

Just cried and emptied wallet for a series 800 Bosch one from Costco. Slightly less painful as it was a “dumb” model, discontinued now and not wi-fi connected as I’ve never used any smart features on any appliance I have. Got the extended warranty just in case. This thing better last.

I'm fixing the bottom of the back door where the frames were rotting out. The tool to wood ratio is about 200:1.

Tearing out the frames and replacing them was too deep a rabbit hole and I'd likely end up with a total renovation of the dining room. Cutting the alarm wire that was supposed to be on the other side of the stud was a bonus.

In a previous house, I may have declared good enough and after removing most of the rot installed a pressure treated block then used some fibre bondo and paint to finish the job. Doors were due for replacement but it wasn't worth the money at the time.

Just finished up converting our COVID WFH basement offices into a 22x12 craft room for my wife.

Removed 20' of partition walls and doors, ceiling, and laminate flooring. Patched the exterior walls, re-wired everything in the ceiling, added laundry (water/drain, gas, and electricity), painted, added 2 x 20a circuits for her heat presses, a row of built-in cabinets, and laid new vinyl plank. Also roughed in a gas line for a fireplace if supplementary heat is required.

First time I've used 'luxury vinyl plank'. Fairly easy to install, and looks really good. I hope it holds up.

On budget, but not on time. Was hoping to do it in 2 weekends -- took 5!

I used luxury plank in a workshop , now I know why some luxury vinyl is $2.00sqft and some is $14.00 . I used $2.00, lesson learned .

I refuse a wifi washer dryer or fridge . No buddy at headquarters needs to track my consumption of mayo.

Good move I have had 3 Bosch dishwashers in 3 different houses and never a issue and the cleaning is so much better.

Was a little pricy at $5, best quality I could find - I don’t seek out prestige brands, but I never skimp on quality for building materials.

Our Bosch is 14 years and still going. Only had to replace the door gasket a couple years ago.

GE bought in 2000, gave up last week. That thing owes us nothing, it cleaned up for a family of 5 for 23 years.

Another GE is on its way.

We put a 800 series Bosch in our new build in 2020 and it works excellent and has been one of the few appliances that has not broken down. Would buy it again.

Good day so far today…almost.

1. Fixed cabinet doors (for now anyway)
2. Installed new faucet in bathroom
3. Installed new lever for water dispenser in fridge….

But I can’t for the life of me reinstall the water hose into the spout. Either it’s too short or too stiff but I can’t get it. Any suggestions?

It all works but it won’t dispense into the spout and only into the open mechanism where it only makes it out by overfilling.

Recommendations? Suggestions? Tips and tricks? My small fingers are too fat to get in there, and needle nose pliers aren’t helping.

Pic looking up so we can see hose and fitting?

Here’s the hose the nozzle it needs to go through

I’ll try a heat gun but holding the hose in boiling water didn’t help much.

There’s gotta be a trick / method to it to get it into the stupid nozzle

Hot water on hose then use a guide rod up through the black part into the end of the hose. Something like a pen or drill bit to allow you to jiggle the hose into position from the bottom while you slide the panel up.

Just tried…zero success.

I keep spot checking voltage. I've never got below 250. Highest I've seen is 254.6. I didn't bother calling for that as I suspect they would call it 254 and do nothing again. I need clean 255 for action.

Looked into a house energy monitor to see if I could get constant logging (at the expense of accuracy (2% rated vs 0.7% for multimeter). The best current option for monitors seems to be Emporia Vue Gen 2. That measures voltage but doesn't bother logging it so it's useless for this project. I haven't decided whether it is worth spending hundreds on a voltage logger that won't see a lot of use after this project. If it saves a single control board in an appliance I will be up but I can never prove whether getting the voltage dropped saved anything (nor leaving it high killed anything).

EDIT:
Saw 255.5 last night. Got a pic of 255.3. People were over so I didn't call Hydro for a while and it had dropped to 253 when I had time so I didn't call them.

Apparently all of these smart meters are capable of voltage measurement and alerting. As I understand it, They currently use that for outage tracking. I don't know why they don't track actual voltage. I assume it's because they don't want to know. If they know and don't do anything, they will get killed by public opinion and courts. Not knowing gives them plausible deniability.
