Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I am looking for suggestions to protect the tarmac driveway when working on the car. There's a (good) chance rust, oil, brake fluid will leak. Something like an oversized shoe tray would be awesome. Any sugestions?
For possible fluid leaks I have just used puppy pads. They dont work well if you are rolling a creeper over them as they tend to bunch up under the wheels but are fine if you are only laying on them. They will also blow away if its windy unless weighted down with rocks or something (tape them together for needed size and weigh down the corners)

I have a couple cardboard boxes. One from shelves, one from something else. Break the box down and it gives you something to slide on and protect the driveway. When it gets dirty, throw it out. Coated cardboard lasts a little longer and is a little easier to slide on.

Different style.

Also, side question....CAT5/6 cable...does it need conduit to be run outside or simply just run the cable?

This is the best time to run it around the house instead of mucking around through the inside. Maybe an access point to the upstairs part, and then a conduit to the new shed.
If it is protected/covered regular cable should be fine. If it is going to be exposed (UV likely the biggest issue) they do make outdoor rated cable.

My last roofing job was subbed to a crew of Algerians . Great guys and did a good job , I suspect a lot of larger companies run this way, marketing and sales , roofing second .

Some interesting stuff on roofers. A lot of the advertised ones are agents that sub the job to others keeping a third for themselves.

Secondly, I'm finding a lot don't have WSIB clearances. I don't want to lose my house to someone that falls off the roof.
Wow. Even the slightly sketchy guy I ended up using has WSIB. I am not interested in paying sales staff. Most were pretty damn useless.

A) If the contract agent has WSIB does the sub-trade he offloads it to have coverage?

B) The agent subs out to the lowest bidder. :(

So…what’s the most efficient design of a shed?

Something that allows for maximum usage of the space available within the max envelope (let’s go with 10x16). I’m planning on a 2-3ft overhang so stuff can be placed underneath also. 3.5m height max.

In stupid zoning bylaws, you are limited to 10m2 per shed but are allowed 30m2 total. Someone posted a baller design before. Build two 10m2 sheds with a 10m2 pad between (with roof but no front wall). Great combination of inside and outside space.

EDIT:

Your max height is 3.0m.

If you build a detached garage with access to a driveway, it is not considered and accessory building or structure (4.1.2.4). What does it take to get a driveway off the crescent? I didn't dig into the feasibility of two garages or two driveways. It would have minimal impact on traffic/safety or anything else but I could see opposition with a thin edge of the wedge argument.

3' overhang will be hard. By-law is to highest point. Assuming 10x10 shed with gable roof at 3:12 slope (already pushing it and I wouldn't go flatter), That is a 2' drop from peak to eaves. Something like 7' clear. A roof 16' wide over a shed 10' wide looks like a mushroom.

A gambrel roof will give you the most interior volume but it looks like a barn. That may not pass the wifes architectural control test.

Hmmm…I was quite sure I saw 160sqft is the max in Mississauga now.

I can call 311 to confirm but I worry they don’t know wtf they’re doing as it’s a new change with OBC.

This isn't a code issue, it's a zoning issue. OBC doesn't matter for zoning.

Would be a small shame to nail up a 160 sqft shed , then saw it back to 100 .
Ignorance of the law is not a defence .

You dont need to saw it back to 100, just convert it into two legal sheds. I couldnt see anything about required setback between sheds. He is allowed three sheds at up to 10 sq m each. Personally, I think one larger one looks better than three smaller but the municipality doesnt agree with me.

Ontario building code is now 15m2 for no permit (~160 sq.ft) but the local municipality might not have changed their rules yet. Toronto is clear at 15m2 now as the limit now. For Mississaga it may require more digging, I see some different limits based on lot size (over and under 750m2) but over all shed size was not apparent via a quick search...

This is also where I’m confused. Multiple references to multiple sizes in the same webpage.

My lot is 705m2, so shy of the 750m2 required.

I’ll just call the city to confirm. I’m all horned up for 160m2.

As for today…800$ and happy my Volt and trailer are up to the task.

Building permit required and compliance with zoning do not have to agree. You always have to comply with zoning. Not every structure needs a building permit.
