Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

I really like those low root flush head blum screws , I dont use them often but I have access to a 5x10 cnc , (and a guy that can make it go) so I give him my gables , he drills for the tandems , its so nice. I order maple dovetailed drawer boxes from Distinctive in Kitchener, they set them up for tandems , boom done. I can dovetail a dawer by hand , and own a huge Porter dovetail jig , but they make a perfect spaced drawer and it doesnt take three attempts to get it right .

I'm starting a quarter cut white oak vanity for the powder room , I feel like I'm cheating but Heldman in KW will veneer the panels in size so zero waste, We have a small pile of solids left from when we had a hardwood business ( long story) and the bottom drawers will come from Distinctive , they will custom wood them if I supply the wood . I'll make the two doors so i can claim I made it, there a rail & style bit set buried in the cellar somewhere
We can't make dovetail drawers for what we can buy them for. Makes sense to take advantage of those who specialize.

MP is that your house? The brick is spalling, penetrated by water that then freezes (expands) and spalls the brick. Your house is also double brick (brick is structural) and you can tell by the sideways bricks every six rows in the pic that tie into the inner layer of bricks (likely cinder block in your case), it is not a brick veneer like a modern house. There could have been a moisture problem here at some point that lasted years like no eve's trough, repeated piled snow, etc. Maybe ongoing (bad) or it just needs some re-pointing and other work as the moisture problem is gone. Can you see some brick dust on the ground in spring or do you see the damage progressing?

Insulating the inside can also cause this as you change the dew point of the brick and it cannot dry itself out (retains more water). It will make it worse if the cuase is not fixed. If this was my house and I was insulating I would be doing it from the outside, specially if I see any progression in gamage. I would re-point bad areas before covering.

My house is similar brick cinder block construction. I insulated with 2X4 and FG over 30 years ago and have had no problems.

I can see the condition being the result of the piling of snow. Also there was a silicon treatment that people put on their brickwork to waterproof it. It could also trap moisture in the brick, causing it to spall upon freezing.

Neglecting a leaky eaves trough would also do it.

Help me explain that to guys that want to make MDF doors because they own a CNC machine. Unless you own a full on Dovetailing machine nobody can crank those out at a profit in production . Now if i could get people to understand that Arauco (sault St marie) and Uniboard (que)mdf will expand and contract at a different rate, and when mixed in an assembly will show cracks in the paint . Theres my day lol

Pulled some from each shelf and just store it in a cabinet below. Guess I really don't need to keep that much up there anyways.

There are better mini chainsaws. That bosch micro chainsaw is a toy and not all that useful.
This is the one my dad has...was going to use it on some trees but thankfully checked and they're City of Mississauga trees...not a good day if you're caught trimming their trees.

When a branch fell down last year I called CoM and they told me 'next time don't touch it because you're not allowed to touch our trees / branches...whether they fell or not. Call us and we'll come by'.

For those interested in doing some home upgrades this year...

Up to 10k from Enbridge:

I'm particularly interested in this aspect...

And possibly, although with window pricing...

Plus there's a 40k 0% loan over 10 years.

I'll be looking into both this weekend as I wouldn't mind doing it.

You need to have a registered energy evaluator come by the house 2x ($600/visit), and I need to confirm whether I can do the work, or if it needs to be a registered contractor to perform the work.

100% of outer walls need to be insulated to be eligible for the full grant, which I need to confirm if exterior counts because if not, I can't rip up the entire house in 1 year.

We did an energy audit on the last house in the last round of incentives. Had to be a “enbridge certified auditor” , did tbe big blower fan on the door test. He gave us a list of recommended things to do , gaskets on receptacle, some new weatherstrip , caulking on xyz . About $100 in materials and a day and we got $2500 back , we paid him about a grand for the before and after tests. It’s worth pursuing.

2X4 with fibre glass is only R10 to 12, unlikely that will do much in this context. It also depends on the brick, some are more porous than others.

The greater the level of insulation, the qualities of the brick and how it is exposed to water/rain will determine the results. As an example, do a Victorian era home with spray foam and see what happens. Better brick and less insulation = less likely to have a problem but never zero risk.

FYI for the DIY renovators out there....

Rona on Islington midway between Bloor and Queensway is closing. Everything is 50% off right now. I was there yesterday....

Tools are pretty thin to gone. No insulation or lumber left. Electrical and plumbing is getting thin but they still had some fixtures and basics.

Lots of interior trim and doors. Lots of paint. Lots of eves trough stuff. Plenty of fence stuff. Plenty of hardware.

Good to know. Make sure you do a sanity check before buying. Last time Rona went bankrupt some of their stuff was more than HD daily price even though it was theoretically 50% off at Rona. Not sure if they marked up to mark down or if their prices were crazy to start.

EDIT:
@mimico_polak start the truck. Time to grab siding and/or hardie if it's available.

Prices seemed to be regular, then discounted.

I did not see any hardie but they had lots of vinyl siding trim yesterday (white and that beige/grey from memory), I did not look for the siding itself.

There may be some 4x8 and 4x10 Hardie cement panels , the bevel siding is almost always job lot ordered since the trims and such are different on everyone’s job . And they can have it onsite in 3-5 days , it ships out of Caledonia .

Rona is Lowes. I'm not surprised that store is getting the axe as it's smaller and close to their bigger one in North Queen.

I liked it for small stuff because there was never a line up, possibly part of the reason for closing.

Lowes are being rebranded as Rona now after they sold all Canadian operations for a fire sale price to a vulture fund.

Lowes as an entity just never got thier act together , much like Target when they came into Canada . Rona is Quebec based and at least gets the Canadian market .
I like Castle stores , which like Timbermart are independanly owned and belong to a buying group , which gives them chain store power but local management. Home Hardware building centers are similar but seem to operate or a more hit or miss basis for service levels.

Target and Walmart are similar in that they have far better buys in the USA.

Everyone that shopped Target in the USA went gaga when they heard they were coming to Canada. When they arrived it was disappointing. Walmart made it work.

Not my house but helped a buddy upgrade his bathroom at their home place.

Next time try to offset seams more and use fewer pieces. You'll have a little more waste but less likely for cracks to come through tile.

EDIT:
I can't tell from picture but hopefully you used epoxy coated screws. Cement board will eat black screws over time.

Drywall contractor coming next week to finally fix the damage from a leaky flat roof that we had replaced recently. We’ve lived with the damage for years as we couldn’t afford to replace the roof previously and figured that periodic leaks would just be something we needed to deal with in the meantime. This is pretty exciting as it’s in the last part of the house that needs painting too which will be done in the summer. We know this guy is good as a friend uses him for all her work and she’s fastidious. The damage is in three different parts of the extension on the house so he’ll be here for a good few days.

Also snagged a sofa from Costco.ca too. They have a buy more save more event on right now on some furniture and a 3 person leather power recliner happened to be in the list. It was $2499 then $400 off from the event (just about the cheapest price for a leather sofa we have seen). I checked though and the next tier of savings was at $2501 and then you get $600 off…so I also got a 2 pack of chairs for $149 in the offer list which were essentially free and also knocked another $50 off the sofa price.

Edit: this offer is on until tomorrow in case anyone wants to try the same thing.

Glad to hear your getting the rest of that roof situation sorted out . That stuff drives me bonkers , we had a water issue from a roof leak and the roofers when done said leave it three months before repair to just dry right out , it haunted me in my sleep till fixed
